I first encountered Fat Freddy's Drop through a track on a Jazzanova remix compilation—trust me, it's a fantastic starting point. They describe themselves as a "dub funk jam band," and their first album, _Based on a True Story_, definitely embraces the dub vibe: the echo, the off-beat rhythms, the laid-back vocals. "This Room" kicks off with some crisp percussion, while "Ray Ray" leans into a super-chill groove, flirting with R&B before transitioning into a sleek, minimalist dub. This musical twist happens again with "Dark Days," which begins with a folksy feel before it starts to groove. I wonder if this shape-shifting is due to their jam band roots? Either way, it keeps the tracks engaging. The female vocals on "Roady" bring an exciting layer of texture, while "Del Fuego" doesn't quite ignite, instead choosing a more reflective path. And "Hope" wraps up the album on that same soothing note, incorporating gospel elements with its lingering Rhodes chords.
After checking my collection and the list of songs, I believe this is the specific pressing I own. My copy has a bit of surface noise with some crackles and pops, and it was bought new. I gave it a wet clean using a Big Fudge Record Friend, and I also used a sticky roller and brush before playing it. It could be an issue with my setup, but it might just be the quality of this particular pressing.
I got a version with only sides C and D, so I'm lacking the first part of the album :/ , so frustrating...
In my view, this is an essential album by Fat Freddy's. I believe a band's first 2-3 albums truly capture their unique sound. "Hope" is my absolute favorite track. I had the chance to see them live at Bluesfest in Byron Bay, Australia, and they were absolutely phenomenal. The audience was completely captivated.
I just had to write my first review for this album! Because, honestly, it's an absolute masterpiece! "Based on a True Story" has been my top favorite for the past two and a half years. It's all about that soulful dub and reggae vibe! The tracks build up so smoothly on those chill rhythms and beats. Some tunes even have a bit of a funky twist. The horns here? They're just spot on, blending right into the songs. None of that cheesy trumpet stuff. The bass and melodies are so warm! And that voice! Joe Dukie has what you'd call a "voice of a century" in German. His singing gives me goosebumps! The lyrics are so interesting and full of positive energy ("what's the world without soul?" - Ray Ray / "something mystic in the soul connection, something magic in your misty eyes" - Flashback)! It's music for the soul! Music for the heart!
