Product description

Carole King's 1970 album, Writer, is a seminal work of singer-songwriter craftsmanship, blending the intimacy of folk rock with the emotional depth that would become a hallmark of her career. Released on 1 May 1970 via Epic, this 43-minute masterpiece weaves a sonic tapestry that showcases King's remarkable storytelling ability and poignant songwriting.

From the opening notes of 'Spaceship Races' to the closing strains of 'Up On the Roof', a delightful duet with James Taylor, Writer takes the listener on a journey through the highs and lows of love, relationships, and self-discovery. With tracks like 'Child of Mine', 'Goin' Back', and 'To Love', King's unique voice and perspective shine through, offering a glimpse into her inner world and the experiences that shaped her art.

Throughout the album, King's genre-bending style effortlessly shifts between the melancholic ('No Easy Way Down') and the uplifting ('Raspberry Jam'), demonstrating her remarkable range and versatility as a songwriter. With Writer, Carole King cemented her status as a leading figure in the singer-songwriter movement, and this album remains a testament to her enduring talent and influence.

This LP was released in 1979.

  • James Taylor's Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    VepqoqNuyreuAugust 21, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This album is a fantastic piece of work by one of America's most underappreciated songwriters. I'd have given anything to be there when they recorded this masterpiece. James Taylor's presence is all over this record too!

  • King's Raw Debut Album

    4 out of 5 stars
    SrNifaiJune 22, 2025United KingdomπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Carole King's first album showcases a grittier sound compared to her later works, with tracks like "Spaceship Races" and "Raspberry Jam" showcasing her rock side. Her take on "Goin' Back" is fantastic, though it might not overshadow the Dusty Springfield or Byrds versions. The album wraps up with her cover of "Up On The Roof," which is the only part of WRITER that hints at what TAPESTRY would become. It's a testament to the power of a great producer, as TAPESTRY would later demonstrate under Lou Adler's guidance. This copy is decent, though the mid-range could be clearer. My copy is in great condition, playing smoothly with no detectable surface noise.

Carole King's first four albums are just plain fantastic, you can't go wrong with them!

  • King's Gritty Debut Album

    4 out of 5 stars
    SvQoroiJanuary 30, 2025United KingdomπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Carole King's first album showcases a grittier sound compared to most of her later work. Tracks like "Spaceship Races" and "Raspberry Jam" showcase her rock side, perhaps more than anywhere else in her discography. Her take on "Goin' Back" is truly delightful, though it might not outshine the versions by Dusty Springfield or The Byrds. The album wraps up with her cover of "Up On The Roof", which is the only part of WRITER that hints at what TAPESTRY would bring. It's a testament to the power of a great producer, as TAPESTRY would later demonstrate under Lou Adler's guidance. This particular pressing is decent, though the mid-range has a slightly metallic quality. My copy is in great condition, playing smoothly with no detectable surface noise.

An amazing album from one of America's most underappreciated songwriters. I wish I could've been there when they recorded this masterpiece. James Taylor's presence is all over this one too!
