Simple Things" hit the shelves in '77, with Carole King launching her own Avatar Records and gaining more creative control. Though other albums might've sold more, this one's my personal masterpiece. "Hard Rock CafΓ©" was the rock track that got airtime. "Hold On" is an uplifting anthem, with that sharp electric guitar, "Hold on until we can get there; you know when we get there, all the dark forces will be gone." "In the Name of Love" is another stunning piece, King's vocals starting soft and building up till the end, "Birth and life and death makes a circle we are all part of; To see the light everlasting, live in the name of love. Forever." The album wraps up with one of my all-time faves. On "One," Carole's joined by her daughters Louise and Sherry Goffin on backing vocals, "Open your heart and let the love come shining through; And you will do what you need to do to know just where the other βyouβ is coming from; He is one β She is one β A tree is one β the earth is one β the universe is one β I am oneβ¦ Be one." This album's a true gem. Enjoy!
It wasn't quite as amazing as it might've been, but it wasn't as terrible as some folks say. There's a bit too much of that peace-and-love spiritual stuff in the words for my taste, but when she really let loose and rocked out, it was still pretty great :)
