Lucinda Williams has been putting on entire album performances for quite some time now, and, I kid you not, she's often so unfamiliar with her own songs that she has to use sheet music. Now, I've been wondering if this could be a new music trend, but "This Sweet Old World" is essentially a re-recording of her 1992 album "Sweet Old World." First off, the album is quite lengthy, clocking in at seventy-one minutes with the bonus tracks, and for the most part, it's filled with slow, melancholic, and intimate confessions of sad songs from a different time in Lucinda Williams' life… though there are a couple of upbeat rockers perfect for a jangling Rickenbacker guitar. The main issue is that Lucinda stays faithful to all the tracks, giving them a fresh coat of paint, but not trying to give the songs a new look, which, in my opinion, could have revitalized them and made the album even more engaging. That being said, there are a few surprise demo versions of songs from that era that have been expanded upon and bring something new to the table; though not much. When "Sweet Old World" was released in 1992, it was believed that the album would greatly contribute to establishing Williams as a musical gem, but the reality is that Lucinda spiraled out of control on so many levels that she never became the sensation she could have been. Yet, she has always managed to deliver a handful of songs that keep one wondering when she will create her magnum opus. There are those who delight in saying things like “it’s all so familiar,” well of course it is, it’s more than déjà vu, it’s the same old wine in the same old bottle. Yes, I can fully understand revisiting a song or two and transforming them into something entirely different, but if this 'is' a new musical trend, I'm afraid you're going to be hearing me bang my head against the wall. There was no instrumentation or technology that would have made this album any better in 1992 than it is today, just a voice and stance from twenty-five years ago … though to be honest, isn't that why we go to concerts, to hear an artist's yesterday songs today.
