The "Made in France" text is missing above the barcode on my version. It sounds fantastic and the cover is quite nice as well. Absolutely love this album.

Mine sounds awesome. There's some crackles on the first song of Side A but then it's good.

  • Lucinda's Uneven, Heartfelt Journey

    3 out of 5 stars
    ylbauqcaazaDecember 20, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

Stretching to nearly 90 minutes, Lucinda Williams offers up a surplus of tracks on this album that don't quite hit the mark, material that might've been better off saved for another time or left out entirely. That said, the songs that have stuck with me are absolutely stunning, often carrying a lo-fi, ethereal, dreamy quality, as if they're untethered from time, drifting just out of reach. It's like tuning into a faint radio signal on a road trip, straining to catch the sound, only for it to vanish as you round a bend. You're left wanting to turn back, just to recapture a bit of that magic that sent shivers down your spine. Lucinda is one of the few artists still penning songs from the heart, crafting tunes that resonate with her personal emotional journeys. These are songs that linger, that fit snugly in your back pocket, because who among us hasn't had those moments of vulnerability and needed music like this to remind us we're not alone on life's deserted highways? Now, there will be those who adore the songs I've chosen to skip, and that's the beauty of Lucinda Williams—she has something to offer everyone. So take what you like, or take it all. As for me, I'm keeping: Dust, Death Came, Doors Of Heaven, Ghosts Of Highway 20, Bitter Memory, If My Love Could Kill, Faith & Grace ... the rest feel like echoes of tunes I've heard before. Post Script: Ms. Williams has faced her share of struggles, beyond her own battles with substance abuse. The loss of her mother has been a recurring theme in her life. Two early partners died by self-inflicted gunshot and liver failure, respectively. Her mother, grappling with alcoholism and mental illness, lost custody of her children after a divorce and passed away in 2004. But the void in Williams' life is the absence of her father, the renowned poet Miller Williams, who passed away last month at 84, and to whom she was deeply close. Despite all this, Lucinda Williams professes not to be a Christian, claims she doesn't believe in a god, yet she seems to constantly reach out to him, or cry out to her listeners with lines like "You've gotta get right with god …" in the song "Faith & Grace." Maybe Lucinda needs to feel that there's something out there offering guidance or comfort, but there isn't, and I struggle to accept songs that seem to praise or search for this elusive, non-existent savior. These songs frustrate me; I never play them. If Lucinda were here today, I'd ask her to stop this spiritual peddling, to realize that we're all we've got, and if we don't look out for each other, the world is doomed. Then I'd hug her, give her my number, tell her to call me anytime, and plead with her, whether she believes or not, to stop writing letters to god.
