Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Nikos Skalkottas with his "Piano Concerto No. 3," a live recording that showcases the Greek composer's unique blend of classical elegance and modern innovation. Released in 2020 under the Paladino Music label, this album is a testament to Skalkottas's enduring legacy and his ability to create music that transcends time and borders.

The album features three movements of the Piano Concerto No. 3, AK 18: "I. Moderato," "II. Andante sostenuto," and "III. Allegro giocoso," performed with precision and passion by pianist Daan Vandewalle, the Blattwerk ensemble, and conducted by Johannes Kalitzke. Each movement offers a distinct emotional landscape, from the contemplative "Andante sostenuto" to the lively "Allegro giocoso," demonstrating Skalkottas's mastery of musical storytelling.

Skalkottas, known for his exploration of stylistic accessibility, returned to Greece from Germany in 1933, and his works often reflect his deep connection to his Greek heritage. This concerto, scored for 10 instruments and percussion, is a prime example of his ability to blend traditional and modern elements seamlessly.

With a duration of 54 minutes, this live recording is a must-listen for any classical music enthusiast. It's a chance to experience the power and beauty of Skalkottas's music in a live setting, where the energy and spontaneity of the performance can truly shine. Whether you're a longtime fan of Skalkottas or a newcomer to his work, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

About Nikos Skalkottas

Nikos Skalkottas, a pivotal figure in 20th-century classical music, stands out as one of Greece's most influential composers. Born in Chalkis in 1904, Skalkottas was a prodigious talent from a young age, beginning his violin studies at just five years old. His musical journey led him to become a key member of the Second Viennese School, where he absorbed influences from both classical traditions and Greek folk music. Skalkottas' compositions are renowned for their innovative use of atonality, reflecting his association with the likes of Arnold Schoenberg. Throughout his career, he crafted a diverse body of work that includes chamber music, piano compositions, and orchestral pieces, all marked by his unique musical language. Despite his untimely death in 1949, Skalkottas' legacy endures, making him a cornerstone of Greek classical music and a composer whose works continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
