Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Nikos Skalkottas with the album "Skalkottas: Ballet Music for Piano." This 2006 release on the BIS label is a testament to Skalkottas' unique compositional voice, blending contemporary classical styles with a distinct Greek influence. The album features the virtuoso piano performances of Lorenda Ramou, who brings to life the intricate and evocative ballet suites that Skalkottas composed.

The album is divided into several suites, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of Greek life and landscape. "The Land and the Sea of Greece" suite paints a vivid picture of rural life, from the rhythmic "The Harvest" to the lively "The Grape Stomping." The "Dance Suite, AK 15, 'Island Images'" suite captures the essence of island life, with tracks like "Building of Fishing Boat" and "Greek Dance" showcasing the cultural richness and communal spirit of the islands.

"Skalkottas: Ballet Music for Piano" also includes the dramatic and narrative-driven "The Maiden and Death, AK 12," a suite that tells a story through its seven movements, each expertly arranged for piano. The album concludes with the haunting "Procession to Acheron, AK 79c" and the ethereal "Echo, AK 77," leaving the listener with a sense of the profound and the mystical.

With a total duration of 1 hour and 2 minutes, this album is a comprehensive exploration of Skalkottas' ballet music, offering both familiarity and discovery for classical music enthusiasts. Whether you're a longtime admirer of Skalkottas or a newcomer to his work, this album is a rewarding journey into the heart of Greek contemporary classical music.

About Nikos Skalkottas

Nikos Skalkottas, a pivotal figure in 20th-century classical music, stands out as one of Greece's most influential composers. Born in Chalkis in 1904, Skalkottas was a prodigious talent from a young age, beginning his violin studies at just five years old. His musical journey led him to become a key member of the Second Viennese School, where he absorbed influences from both classical traditions and Greek folk music. Skalkottas' compositions are renowned for their innovative use of atonality, reflecting his association with the likes of Arnold Schoenberg. Throughout his career, he crafted a diverse body of work that includes chamber music, piano compositions, and orchestral pieces, all marked by his unique musical language. Despite his untimely death in 1949, Skalkottas' legacy endures, making him a cornerstone of Greek classical music and a composer whose works continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
