Product description

Discover the captivating sounds of Nikos Skalkottas, a pivotal figure in Greek music of the 20th century, with the release of his Piano Concerto No. 3. This album, released on November 1, 2019, under the Paladino Music label, offers a rare opportunity to delve into the work of a composer whose contributions have been historically underrepresented. The concerto, composed in 1939, is performed by the talented pianist Daan Vandewalle, accompanied by the ensemble Blattwerk, under the direction of conductor Johannes Kalitzke.

This recording is only the third ever made of this concerto, making it a significant addition to any classical music collection. The three-movement work—Moderato, Andante Sostenuto, and Allegro Giocoso—showcases Skalkottas' unique blend of neoclassical and modernist influences, creating a rich and engaging listening experience. The concerto's intricate interplay between the piano, wind instruments, and percussion offers a dynamic and vibrant exploration of Skalkottas' compositional genius.

With a total runtime of 54 minutes, this album provides a comprehensive journey through Skalkottas' musical vision. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this recording offers a compelling introduction to the work of one of Greece's most important composers. Don't miss the chance to experience the timeless beauty of Nikos Skalkottas' Piano Concerto No. 3.

About Nikos Skalkottas

Nikos Skalkottas, a pivotal figure in 20th-century classical music, stands out as one of Greece's most influential composers. Born in Chalkis in 1904, Skalkottas was a prodigious talent from a young age, beginning his violin studies at just five years old. His musical journey led him to become a key member of the Second Viennese School, where he absorbed influences from both classical traditions and Greek folk music. Skalkottas' compositions are renowned for their innovative use of atonality, reflecting his association with the likes of Arnold Schoenberg. Throughout his career, he crafted a diverse body of work that includes chamber music, piano compositions, and orchestral pieces, all marked by his unique musical language. Despite his untimely death in 1949, Skalkottas' legacy endures, making him a cornerstone of Greek classical music and a composer whose works continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
