Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Nikos Skalkottas with the album "Duos With Violin," released in 2002 under the BIS label. This collection showcases the brilliance of Skalkottas, a prominent Greek composer, through a series of enchanting duets featuring the violin. The album spans a diverse range of compositions, including sonatas, suites, and folk song arrangements, each piece meticulously crafted to highlight the expressive power of the violin.

The album opens with the Violin Sonata, a three-movement work that sets the tone with its dynamic and marked allegro, followed by a tender andante, and culminating in a lively rondo. The Little Suites No. 1 and No. 2 offer a delightful blend of dance-like movements and lyrical melodies, showcasing Skalkottas' ability to blend classical forms with folk influences. The Duo for Violin and Cello, Duo for Violin and Viola, and the Scherzo for 4 Instruments add layers of complexity and richness to the collection, demonstrating Skalkottas' versatility and mastery of chamber music.

The 3 Greek Folk-Song Arrangements provide a glimpse into the composer's deep connection to his cultural heritage, with each piece evoking the essence of Greek folk music. Performed by a talented ensemble including Georgios Demertzis, Maria Asteriadou, Maria Kitsopoulos, and Chara Sira, the album is a testament to the collaborative spirit and technical prowess of its performers.

About Nikos Skalkottas

Nikos Skalkottas, a pivotal figure in 20th-century classical music, stands out as one of Greece's most influential composers. Born in Chalkis in 1904, Skalkottas was a prodigious talent from a young age, beginning his violin studies at just five years old. His musical journey led him to become a key member of the Second Viennese School, where he absorbed influences from both classical traditions and Greek folk music. Skalkottas' compositions are renowned for their innovative use of atonality, reflecting his association with the likes of Arnold Schoenberg. Throughout his career, he crafted a diverse body of work that includes chamber music, piano compositions, and orchestral pieces, all marked by his unique musical language. Despite his untimely death in 1949, Skalkottas' legacy endures, making him a cornerstone of Greek classical music and a composer whose works continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
