  • Morrissey's Lackluster Effort

    2 out of 5 stars
    Dtetakat-TosDecember 7, 2024United States🇺🇸

Here's another Morrissey album where it seems like Morrissey didn't pour his heart into it as much as he did on other records. It's all quite pleasant, but it lacks that certain spark. The track "You Have Killed Me" is a prime example. It's a catchy tune, one of the many Morrissey could probably write without breaking a sweat. It's nowhere near as stunning as the tracks on his previous album "You Are The Quarry," particularly "I Have Forgiven Jesus," which "You Have Killed Me" pales in comparison to. Die-hard Morrissey fans will likely enjoy this album just as much as his other work. They'll even get to hear Morrissey in love ("Dear God Please Help Me"), which is a mix of pitiful, irritating, and beautifully painful all at once. But newcomers might want to look elsewhere for an introduction to Morrissey's world. Start with "Viva Hate," his incredible debut solo album, or "You Are The Quarry." They've got far more edge, fun, and presence than "Ringleader," which, sorry to say, ends up in the pile of CDs I'll get to later :o( And I should mention, the bonus DVD doesn't add anything special, so you might as well grab the first "for sale" CD-only version of "Ringleader" you find. It IS Morrissey, after all ;o)

  • Morrissey's Forgettable Ringleader

This seems to be yet another Morrissey album where it feels like he didn't pour his heart into it as much as he has with other works. It's all quite pleasant, indeed, but also rather..., well, forgettable. The track You Have Killed Me is a prime example. It's a catchy tune, one of the many Morrissey could probably pen in his sleep. It's nowhere near the brilliance of songs on his previous album You Are The Quarry, particularly I Have Forgiven Jesus, which You Have Killed Me seems like a duller version of. Morrissey fans, of course, will likely enjoy this album as much as any other release from him. They'll even get to hear Morrissey in love (Dear God Please Help Me), which is simultaneously very pitiful, quite irritating, and painstakingly beautiful. All at the same time. But newcomers might want to look elsewhere for an introduction to Morrissey's world. Start with Viva Hate (that incredible, awe-inspiring, unmatched solo debut) or the aforementioned You Are The Quarry. They've got far more grit, fun, and impact than Ringleader, which - do excuse me! - currently sits in my to-do pile of CDs :o( Oh, I should mention that the bonus DVD doesn't add anything extraordinary, so you might as well go with the first "for sale" CD-only version of Ringleader you find. I mean, it IS Morrissey, so... ;o)
