Hands down, this is my top pick among 2Pac's posthumous albums, way better than the hurried but still acclaimed “The Don Killuminati (The 7 Day Theory)”. Afeni Shakur really dug up some fire tracks for this one! “Open Fire” is insane, and I’ll never get why it was dropped when ‘Pac was still with us. “Thug Style” over a reggae beat is another standout on a killer A-side. Side B is more laid-back but just as dope, not a single skip. The C-side keeps the momentum going. My favorites here are the in-your-face “F**k All Y’all” and the “Poetic Justice” throwback “Definition of a Thug N**ga”. Starting from the D-side, you notice a bit of a drop in quality, some tracks feel more like rough demos. But don’t get me wrong, the last part of this 3LP isn’t all bad, it’s just that the gems are fewer and farther between. Take the beautiful “Do For Love”, which is right next to the should’ve-stayed-in-the-vault “Enemies With Me”. The hip-hop version of “I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto” is another highlight. All in all, this is a solid posthumous project. Easily in my top 4 of Tupac’s discography, alive or dead. Rest In Peace King!
R U Still Down (Remember Me) was the first album put out after 2Pac's passing that didn't have any involvement from him during production. All the material on this album dates back to the period between Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z. and Me Against The World. I've always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this album. There are definitely some tracks that deserved to see the light of day, but there are also quite a few that, in my view, should have remained in the vaults. These are mostly the tracks that 2Pac hadn't finished, and the producers had to complete. These songs often lack the sharpness and rarely rise above mediocrity. Given that this is the first record released from the supposedly hundreds of unfinished songs left by 2Pac, it doesn't bode well for future releases. A point that would become all too clear in the following years. In my opinion, R U Still Down (Remember Me) could have benefited from being a single album instead of a double. That way, there would be more emphasis on the tracks that actually sound good. As it stands, there's often a sense of disappointment when another track comes along that's nothing more than a polished demo. Like I said earlier, this is an album with two sides, but still, to me, aside from the Makaveli album, it's the only release after 2Pac's death that has some legitimacy to it.
so i ordered this brand spankin' new online, and when it arrived, the booklet was all messed up with indents. amazon sent me a replacement, but guess what? that booklet had indents too! i dunno if that's a big deal, but thought you should know, 'cause i've never seen a new cd with a messed up booklet before, let alone twice for the same album. i did get my money back for both and got to keep 'em, so i'll probably donate 'em to the thrift store, so, yeah!!!!as an album, it's okay i guess. i grabbed it 'cause it's mostly original versions of songs, no remixes, but i feel like they coulda picked better tracks, it's kinda samey at times and doesn't really show all sides of shakur's personality. but it is cool to have all this unreleased stuff to listen to, and it's really just a collection of pre-deathrow era tracks, so don't expect it to be a real 2pac album at all. i do really suggest checking out until the end of time first if you wanna get into his stuff that came out after he passed, unless you're a huge fan of the S4MN to Me Against the World era shakur. one good thing about this compared to deathrow era stuff is that you get more pac for your money since there aren't many features and he sounds way more sane/coherent/less aggressive compared to after he got shot and locked up for that rape thing.
