Honestly, this was such a refreshing shift for the band, and it's easily my top album from 2021. I couldn't go a single week without giving it a spin. The pressing is alright, with some songs sounding better than others, and I quite like the packaging, especially the extra sleeve in a different hue. The record itself feels different from any other I own—it's got a more pronounced edge rather than being smooth. It's a bummer there's no spoken words between tracks, which really added to the album's unique depth and painted a vivid picture of working-class America. I'll definitely be grabbing the special boxset once it hits the UK. Fingers crossed for another pressing sooner rather than in a decade...Can't wait to see them in June for the Rebel Diamonds tour!
It's got a nice sound, pretty balanced but perhaps a bit too light.
This version of the album has the tracklisting and sides mixed up. The initial three tracks are on A1, the following three are on A2. The next trio is on B1, and the final two are on B2. The bonus tracks are all on the third LP. What's great about this release is that it's not the shortened version. It includes the full spoken intro, unlike the standard vinyl release. That's a nice touch.
This album is a theatre-like experience, dripping with Americana and storytelling. I reckon Brandon's voice has been yearning for this album his whole life. It's as close as you can get to the Sam's Town vibe, except it's missing a massive hit like "When We Were Young." The album has a strong concept feel to it. The sound quality is top-notch, nicely mastered and pressed. It's a shame the dialogue at the start of each song is missing, though, as it's a key part of the journey.
Bit hissy, as it's a type I tape without Dolby NR, but the record level's fine. No speed or wow/flutter problems. Length's trimmed well. Great tape, really enjoyable.
