Product description

Stereolab's "Not Music" is a captivating journey through the band's signature blend of art pop, krautrock, and post-rock, released in November 2010. This tenth studio album, born during the band's self-imposed hiatus, is a testament to Stereolab's enduring creativity and experimental spirit. With 13 tracks spanning 56 minutes, "Not Music" offers a rich tapestry of sounds that showcase the band's unique ability to blend genres seamlessly.

The album opens with "Everybody's Weird Except Me," setting the tone for a collection that is both playful and introspective. Tracks like "Supah Jaianto" and "So Is Cardboard Clouds" highlight Stereolab's knack for crafting catchy melodies that linger in the mind long after the music stops. The album also features two extended remixes of "Chemical Chords" songs by Emperor Machine and Atlas Sound, adding a fresh twist to familiar favorites.

"Not Music" is a celebration of Stereolab's distinctive sound, characterized by intricate rhythms, lush synths, and Tim Gane's and Laetitia Sadier's ethereal vocals. The album's title might suggest a departure from traditional music, but it is anything but. Instead, it is a cohesive and immersive experience that invites listeners to explore the depths of Stereolab's sonic landscape. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the band, "Not Music" is a rewarding listen that showcases Stereolab's continued innovation and artistry.

This 2LP set is pressed on Blue vinyl.

According to Drag City's Instagram update from early last year, there won't be a reissue of this album (at least not from them).

MUSICAL DELIGHT, A SONIC TREAT! ***** It's a challenge to express what Stereolab means to me, especially in a review that does justice to this extraordinary and phenomenal band. Three words come to mind: MUSICAL DELIGHT, A SONIC TREAT. In my humble opinion, Stereolab has an flawless discography, so prolific, brilliant, creative, and packed with hits that showcase their impeccable taste and unparalleled genius. Their musical style is hard to pin down, defying labels, and that's what I love about them. "Not Music" is an album recorded in 2008 during the "Chemical Chords" sessions. I'll never understand why it wasn't released then, but I respect their decision. What truly matters is that it saw the light of day. Stereolab is one of those rare bands that always captivate you. I'm deeply amazed and entranced by this album. At times, it sounds like their early work, while other tracks introduce something new. For me, it would be tough to go through life without new Stereolab albums to buy. So, the idea of their separation hit me hard. This album feels like a gift from heaven, a pleasant surprise. Lætitia Sadier & Tim Gane (and the rest of Stereolab) are incredibly imaginative, with hooks that grab you and won't let go. Of course, the icing on the cake is the celestial perch that is Stereolab. The music shifts tempo incredibly, like an elastic sound with its own vibrant energy. The keyboards are amazing, the vocals delicious, the colors retro-futuristic, with touches of jazz, avant-pop, and soul. It's hypnotic pop bricolage from Krautrock, lounge, and psychedelia, fussing with a distinctive sound. The lyrics are like a big burst of multicolored jets caressing my mind and ears. Stereolab deserves recognition for their special and creative career, and I believe that with our love and reverence, we can make that happen. People like me who deeply love one of the greatest bands, Stereolab. Honestly, with my heart full of feeling, I don't want this to be their last album. But if it is, I have nothing more to say... AWESOME, BRAVO, SPECTACULAR FINAL. It will always be in my mind and heart. Hey guys, I wish you all the best in your individual solo careers. SUCCESSFUL. 4ever STEREOLAB.

About Stereolab

Stereolab, the iconic Anglo-French avant-pop band, has been captivating audiences since their formation in London in 1990. Led by the dynamic duo of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, Stereolab's sound is a mesmerizing blend of krautrock and 1960s French pop, characterized by repetitive motorik beats, vintage electronic keyboards, and Sadier's enchanting vocals in both English and French. Their lyrics delve into political and philosophical themes, drawing inspiration from Surrealist and Situationist art movements. On stage, Stereolab transforms their sound into a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented experience. Over the years, they have expanded their musical palette to include influences from funk, jazz, and Brazilian music, making each performance a unique and immersive journey. With a rich discography and a dedicated following, Stereolab continues to push the boundaries of avant-pop, offering a live experience that is as intellectually stimulating as it is sonically engaging.
