Product description

Father John Misty, the enigmatic stage persona of Josh Tillman, returns with his sixth studio album, "Mahashmashana," a profound exploration of humanity, mortality, and the relentless march of time. Released on November 22, 2024, under the esteemed labels Sub Pop and Bella Union, this chamber pop masterpiece clocks in at a concise yet impactful 50 minutes, featuring eight tracks that delve into the apocalyptic and the introspective.

The album opens with the sprawling title track, "Mahashmashana," setting the stage for a journey that is as much about the end times as it is about personal reflection. Tracks like "She Cleans Up" and "Josh Tillman and the Accidental Dose" showcase Tillman's signature wit and lyrical depth, while "Mental Health" and "Screamland" delve into darker, more unsettling territories. The album's closer, "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All," offers a poignant meditation on the passage of time and the inevitability of change.

"Mahashmashana" is a departure from the more whimsical aspects of Father John Misty's previous work, embracing a self-serious tone that tackles broad themes with a gravitas that is both compelling and thought-provoking. The album's chamber pop arrangements lend an air of elegance and sophistication, complementing the weighty subject matter with a musicality that is both rich and textured.

For fans of Father John Misty, this album is a testament to Tillman's evolution as an artist, pushing the boundaries of his sound while staying true to his distinctive lyrical style. Whether you're a longtime follower or a newcomer to his work, "Mahashmashana" promises a listening experience that is as intellectually stimulating as it is emotionally resonant.

This 2LP set is pressed on Yellow vinyl.

  • Amazing Tunes, Minor Scuffs

    4 out of 5 stars
    2UVNALODecember 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

The tunes are absolutely amazing, it's like experiencing them for the very first time. The packaging is equally impressive. The artwork on the inner sleeves is unique and quite lovely, and the extra newspaper insert is a nice touch. However, my copy arrived with some noticeable scuffs on the inner sleeves. It doesn't affect the sound quality at all, but it's not very appealing to look at and was a bit concerning when I first opened it. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

  • Vinyl Triumphs Over Poor Digital

    1 out of 5 stars
    svzuur73May 29, 2025United States🇺🇸

I own both the digital and vinyl versions of this album, and I'm not usually one to claim vinyl is superior "just because it's analogue." However, the digital mastering is so poorly done that the vinyl version is the clear winner. It's probably the same source, but the vinyl version has a bit more dynamism and is less abrasive. The heavy compression and distortion on "Screamland" was definitely intentional, and I don't mind it at all, but the rest of the album suffers from excessive compression that makes it sound harsh and unbearable. If you've got Dolby Atmos enabled on Apple Music with your AirPods, give the Atmos mix a listen. It's a bit inconsistent, but the album sounds so much better in that format compared to the standard digital version. 10/10 for the album itself, but 1/10 for the mastering. The ADS Group should be held accountable for this musical atrocity—they've committed crimes against humanity with this one. And the FJM team should've caught that this sounds like a garbage disposal on steroids if you play it even a tad louder than normal.

  • Mystery Album Pendant

    5 out of 5 stars
    vjgujdomMarch 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

I didn't get the artwork signed by John, but I did receive this pendant on a string that came with the album (check out the pictures). Does anyone happen to know what it is? From the text on the wrapping, it seems like it's something that has a scent. Perhaps a car air freshener? I don't want to open it and would rather keep it as is.

  • FJM's Mental Health Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    Xad1hocJanuary 18, 2025United States🇺🇸

This record sounds and looks fantastic. Mental Health is an amazing song, FJM really outdid himself here.

  • Magenta Hue, Great Audio

    5 out of 5 stars
    _Dxuqtoju_January 3, 2025United States🇺🇸

Hue is more magenta than red, in my view. Really pleased with the audio quality of this pressing. No surface noise (post wet cleaning)
