I must say, this Blue Note Classic Series pressing has truly blown me away. Kevin Gray has outdone himself with the mastering—the AAA process from the original tapes delivers an astonishing level of presence and dynamic range. The soundstage is impressively wide yet manages to stay intimate; Joe's horn practically jumps out of the left channel, while Elvin Jones' drums ground the right with fantastic clarity, allowing McCoy Tyner and Bob Cranshaw to weave a rich, deep tapestry in the center. It's not often you come across a modern reissue that captures this kind of 'in-the-room' feel without the surface noise of an old copy. For the price, this is a top-notch experience and hands-down the best way to enjoy this quartet masterpiece today.
Musically, it's a solid 5/5! Sound quality is nearly perfect at 4.9/5. And the value? Off the charts, 10/5! Honestly, I'd crank up Elvin Jones' volume on all tracks. Fantastic album, hands down!
My version has a fair bit of non fill on side A. And just one spot of it on side B. Apart from that, it sounds fantastic. The tunes say it all. Incredible!
Alright, we're getting somewhere! Joe's playing on this one is right up there with Rollins/Shorter and Coltrane/Dolphy if you're into those bold tenor players who dare to venture out. He's got that nice experimental touch, bending your ear just enough with his harmony.The second most hardworking guy here is Elvin Jones on drums. He's got this knack for backing up the bandleader by piling on more, not fewer, drums. McCoy Tyner's on piano, laying down some rich harmonic textures and plenty of sweet solo lines.The tracks are mostly Joe's creations, including the super famous "Inner Urge", and a clever blues tune called "Isotope". Don't go thinking he's just some wild honking maniac, though, because Henderson slows it down on "You Know I Care", with some heartfelt melodic improvisation that reminds me of "Naima".This reissue's been remastered by Kevin Gray and it sounds amazing. The pressing is good, but my copy's got a pretty bad dome warp, so my turntable weight can't flatten it out completely. I'll manage.Grab this vinyl, it's a real gem.
Run, don't walk to grab this. It's a steal for the price. This one's definitely in my top 20 MMJ re-releases.
