I went with the feedback I saw on this site and, seriously, this pressing blew me away... Powerful dynamics, crisp sound... I don't even want those cheap 'off the market' OG versions, this one has me completely happy.
i've got nothing else to compare it to, just this current reissue. on this 1980 US pressing, 'changes' and 'life on mars' sound kinda weak—top end's rolled off, bass is bloated—but it really shines on most other tracks. midrange is rich, natural. my guess is RCA used the album master for the singles too, which is why those two tracks sound worse than the rest. the tape probably wore out quick, as that 70s tape formula didn't last long. by 1999, this album's master tape had serious oxide loss on the first two songs of side A (like the tape box scan in the 'five years' box set book shows, that oxide loss note was probably written at abbey road during the 1999 remasters or maybe the 1997 EMI 100 cut).setup i'm using: rega P6, ortofon MC cadenza bronze, stein music 'the perfect interface' turntable mat, liberty B2B-1 phono preamp, hegel H95 integrated amp, mofi sourcepoint 8 speakers, spiral groove and audioquest cabling
I'm attempting to verify the pressing I received from my father. It features RCA Victor black labels with "RE 6" inscribed at the back bottom left, and it's a Dynaflex pressing. However, it lacks the "Previously released as AFL1-4623" text on the lower left front corner and lower right rear corner. Has anyone else come across this particular pressing or seen it listed here?
Side A of my record is absolutely bursting with richness, whereas Side B is remarkably vivid. The difference is quite noticeable, yet it complements each other beautifully.
The U.S. pressing of Hunky Dory from Indianapolis in 1971 (RCA Victor LSP‑4623) initially featured the tan/beige RCA Victor label. Throughout the early 1970s, RCA utilized this label design in the United States before transitioning to the more recognizable orange label around 1972–73. Therefore, if your copy sports the tan label, it aligns with being a genuine early pressing from the Indianapolis facility.
