Amazing album, The Cult are an absolutely fantastic rock band!
It's truly remarkable that a band can create an album like "Hidden City" thirty-two years after their debut—it's a rarity, a beacon of hope, and frankly, a "shut the fuck up" to anyone claiming rock is dead. From the raw, aggressive guitar sound and relentless, almost military rhythm of "Dark Energy" to the entire album, we're treated to Billy's most straightforward, massive, and gritty guitar tones, alongside some of Ian's most genuine vocal performances ever, like in "Birds Of Paradise," where his voice cracks at points for a powerful emotional impact. "Hinterland" is a bold, dark, and twisted anthem bursting with a unique electric energy that seeps into "GOAT," a badass track packed with killer breaks and an attitude that overwhelms me every time, followed by the thunderous energy and drumming of "Avalanche Of Light" and the urgency of "Heathens." "Deeply Ordered Chaos" is a daring political statement wrapped in an almost hypnotic, slow-paced rhythm where Ian effectively channels his ceremonial persona as he poetically exposes some of the first world's political and social inconsistencies and hypocrisy. The closer is an unexpected turn in the band's repertoire with the stripped-down, almost elegiac "Sound And Fury," where a restrained, introspective band supports Astbury's fragile cries, while daring to reveal a rarely shown vulnerability. Overall, "Hidden City" is a strong and brave exploration of the band's sound, one that has never shied away from evolving while remaining relevant and true to its core stylistic roots.
The Cult has delivered an incredible album here. It's their finest work in ages, a true modern classic. Tracks like Dark Energy, Birds of Paradise, Deeply Order Chaos, and GOAT are absolutely phenomenal. The Blood Archive version (limited to 1,000 copies) is an amazing vinyl piece.
If you're a fan of the music on this album, you'll be pleased with this vinyl pressing. The sound quality is fantastic. A legendary band drops another amazing album. The Cult really knows how to deliver.
I'm really pleased with this record, I concur with the other reviews, the 45rpm version sounds absolutely fantastic. It's a shame more double albums aren't made this way!
