I'd been on the hunt for "Full of Fire" by Al Green for ages, couldn't track it down at a fair price. Then, out of the blue, I popped into Recycled Records in San Fran and there it was, just 15 bucks. After spinning that single a dozen times, I'd've happily shelled out 40. No two ways about it, this might just be Al at his best. If you're an Al Green fan, this album's a must-have.
FULL OF FIRE doesn't quite hit the high notes of the previous albums, but it's still got some real standouts like "Glory, Glory", "I'd Fly Away", a take on Buck Owens' "Together Again", and the title song. No complaints about this record, the rhythm section packs a punch, and the soundstage is lively and dynamic. My copy spins smooth with just a touch of faint surface hiss.
Wow, so many amazing reviews for this album already! I couldn't agree more. This is Al at his absolute best, blending the personal and the spiritual seamlessly. I'm a huge fan of all his mid-70s albums, but Full of Fire is simply unbeatable.
