I must admit, I was genuinely impressed by this album. The tracks might come across as a bit predictable and, in many ways, not particularly innovative, yet there's an undeniable harmony between Charles and the country musicians. It's safe to say this is a country album through and through (at least, that's how I've classified it), albeit with hints of blues and jazz. Charles outshines some of the more traditional country singers, though he does connect well with Johnny Cash and a couple of others. The songs may not be exquisite, but I believe the collaboration truly was. Picture this: strolling into a studio with the legendary Ray Charles, who was singing far from his usual genre. The world could use more efforts to unite like Charles did with these country artists, and I'm not saying that in a cheesy way . . . I genuinely mean it.
I'm astonished that anyone would rate this lower than 5 stars... Outstanding production, with engineering surely handled by one of the greatest country producers/engineers of all time, Billy Sherrill. Exceptional songwriting and flawless duets and vocals all the way through.
