Among the top-tier albums from SST, you could confidently declare "this is their finest work" and you'd be spot on. This album - the band - is so bursting with life that I'm left astonished whenever I go a while without listening to it.
My original copy has two side one labels that look like this: ' )... Just adding that mine's still sealed in the shrink wrap and there's a price tag on it, dated 9/85... I saw someone updated the info here, maybe the release date was September 14th, 1985... so... cool, the records from that record shop all have dates on their price tags... so yeah, it was definitely out in September 1985.
It's crisp and level. It’s SST. It’s a solid re-release. As dynamic as it’s gonna be for a cash-strapped label recording a cash-strapped band. It’s Hüsker Dü! Fair price, better than some worn-out used copy you might end up with. Just grab it!
SPLIT AND RULEabsolutely spellbinding!
In my mind, this is the quintessential Hüsker Dü album. The production is finally freed from the oppressively shit sound of Spot, and the songs have a depth and luster that is missing from earlier recordings. "The Baby Song" still irritates the shit out of me after 25+ years, but let it be said that the band had a sense of humor. The album is otherwise packed with maximum impact songs that meld their hardcore beginnings with a sixties aesthetic and an irrepressible melodicism. Highly recommended, if you can believe me. I've heard it said that the sound is lo-fi, but my vinyl copy, while heavy on the treble, sounds clear and rages like a motherfucker.
