Product description

Blue Öyster Cult's "Club Ninja" is a classic rock gem that emerged in 1985, marking the band's tenth studio album. Released on July 26, 1985, under the Columbia/Legacy label, this hard rock masterpiece is a testament to the band's enduring legacy. With a runtime of 45 minutes, "Club Ninja" packs a punch with nine powerful tracks that showcase Blue Öyster Cult's signature sound and lyrical prowess.

The album kicks off with "White Flags," setting the tone for the high-energy rock that follows. Standout tracks like "Dancin' In the Ruins" and "Make Rock Not War" highlight the band's knack for crafting memorable hooks and driving rhythms. "Perfect Water" and "Spy in the House of the Night" offer a blend of intrigue and melody, while "Beat 'Em Up" and "When the War Comes Home" deliver hard-hitting rock anthems. The album concludes with "Shadow Warrior" and "Madness to the Method," rounding out a collection that is both dynamic and cohesive.

"Club Ninja" is notable for being the only Blue Öyster Cult album not to feature a certain member, adding a unique twist to the band's discography. Despite not being one of their most popular albums, it has garnered a dedicated following over the years, appreciated for its raw energy and classic rock appeal. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Blue Öyster Cult's music, "Club Ninja" offers a compelling listen with its timeless rock anthems and unforgettable melodies.

This LP was released in 1986.

  • Perfect Water Must-Have

Just for "Perfect Water", this album is a must-have, it's an amazing track.

  • BÖC's Diminished Edge

    3 out of 5 stars

Club Ninja', I'd say, perfectly illustrates the dilemma that many stadium rock bands from the '70s encountered. How do you keep your edge in a time dominated by excessive use of electronic instruments and diluted AOR tunes? Throw in some song doctors to complicate things further, and you've got this late 1985 album that marked the end of BÖC's streak of exceptionally challenging yet often satisfying hard rock. 'Dancing in the Ruins' was the lead single, and while it did get some radio play and is a decent track - it's not what you'd call classic Blue Öyster Cult. It was the obvious choice for a single, with Buck Dharma on vocals, as he had become the band's commercial voice. He also lends his voice to two other notable tracks, 'Perfect Water' and the album's closer 'Madness to the Method' - the former a soft pop song with progressive elements, the latter a progressive song with a pop vocal. The original, legendary lineup of five had dwindled down to three, with Alan Lanier joining Albert Bouchard as former BÖC members, so the magic was gone too. Eric Bloom does deliver his usual strong performance in 'White Flags' and also 'Shadow Warrior', which borrows the riff from a rejected track from the Teachers Soundtrack (remember that flop of a movie? Yeah, me neither) but is much better. It wasn't a good sign that on four of the songs on 'Club Ninja', including two of the more prominent ones, there were either song doctors involved or, in the case of 'White Flags', a cover. I'd say 'Ninja' is good, but nothing more than that, definitely not the swan song of a great band going out on a high note. Ever heard of Jacques Cousteau?......

The band's distinctive sound and penchant for occult, fantastical, and tongue-in-cheek lyrics have significantly influenced the heavy metal genre.

Blue Öyster Cult gained a devoted following and achieved mainstream success with iconic hits like "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" (1976), "Godzilla" (1977), and "Burnin' for You" (1981), which continue to be staples on classic rock radio. The band was also an early adopter of the music video format, with their videos being in heavy rotation on MTV during its early days.
