  • Audio Quality Disappointment

Awesome album. Three stars due to the audio quality. Really let down. It's squashed and missing bass. I'm keeping my first pressing vinyl.

  • Perfect Press with Timing Strip

I've got a press that's spot on, complete with a strip for timing like they use at radio stations.

  • Secret Treaties: Evolving Favorites

    5 out of 5 stars
    ljkeqpunvwoyOctober 6, 2025United States🇺🇸

I've frequently considered this album to be my top pick from BÖC, but lately, I've had to re-evaluate that stance as 'Spectres' and, to some degree, 'Agents of Fortune' have matched it in my eyes. What made 'Secret Treaties' so special to me initially? Likely because it houses my three all-time favorite Blue Öyster Cult tracks - "Flaming Telepaths", "Astronomy", and "Career of Evil". Additionally, I've grown quite fond of "Harvester of Eyes". Previously, I had an issue with this record; out of the eight songs, I absolutely adored three (or four), while the remaining four left me indifferent. However, I've since warmed up to those other tracks as well. I never particularly cared for "Dominance and Submission" before, but it's definitely grown on me, as have "ME 262" and "Subhuman". Though "Cagey Cretins" is still a bit too bizarre for my taste. Another thing to note is that on the subsequent live album, none of my favorite tracks from this record, except for "Harvester", are included - which I already mentioned in my review for ‘On Your Feet’. As many reviews have noted, ‘Secret Treaties’ is where the band truly found their footing as musicians and songwriters, wrapping up the band's early 'black and white' era. It also cemented the band's reputation as a "heavy" band, though I never felt that label applied to the actual sound or supposed "metal" of the songs. There were several bands around 1974 that were heavier than BÖC, but I will say that the vibe or atmosphere created by this band could certainly fit that category. Eric Bloom particularly shines as a vocalist, and I find his most entertaining vocal performance on "Harvester of Eyes", where he sings about something sinister and creepy with an almost hipster doofus kind of delivery, which is why this song had to grow on me. On my two favorite tracks, which close the LP - "Flaming Telepaths" and "Astronomy" - Bloom is phenomenal! "Career of Evil" - the album version - features both Eric and Albert Bouchard crooning on a Bouchard song with lyrics from punk priestess Patti Smith, who contributed quite a few words to Blue Öyster Cult in their heyday. So the final verdict is that I still love ‘Secret Treaties’, but the other records I previously mentioned have also grown in my estimation. Poison’s in my bloodstream, poison’s in my pride…

  • Top-Notch Vinyl Release

    5 out of 5 stars

This album is absolutely top-notch. The sound quality is incredibly crisp, and each copy is uniquely marked with silver foil numbering on the back. The vinyl is a gorgeous, heavy purple and flat, with breathtaking artwork on both the cover and the insert. Music On Vinyl has truly done justice to BOC's masterpiece with this release. Kudos to them!
