Product description

Bryter Layter, Nick Drake's second studio album, is a captivating journey into the world of folk and singer-songwriter genres. Released on March 5, 1971, under the Island Records label, this album offers a unique blend of Nick Drake's signature introspective lyrics and a more upbeat, jazzy sound compared to his debut. The album, which clocks in at just under 40 minutes, features ten beautifully crafted songs that showcase Drake's poetic songwriting and delicate guitar playing.

The album opens with the instrumental "Introduction," setting the stage for the enchanting "Hazey Jane II." Standout tracks like "At The Chime Of A City Clock" and "One Of These Things First" highlight Drake's ability to weave intricate melodies with thoughtful lyrics. "Hazey Jane I" and "Fly" continue the album's charming narrative, while "Poor Boy" and "Northern Sky" are among the most beloved songs in Drake's discography, known for their timeless appeal and enduring beauty. The album closes with the gentle "Sunday," leaving a lasting impression.

Bryter Layter is a testament to Nick Drake's artistic growth and his ability to evolve his sound while staying true to his unique voice. The album's jazz influences, brought in by producer John Boyd and engineer John Wood, add a layer of richness to Drake's folk roots, making Bryter Layter a standout in his discography. Whether you're a long-time fan of Nick Drake or new to his music, Bryter Layter is an essential addition to any music collection, offering a rich and rewarding listening experience.

This 2013 Reissue LP is housed in a textured sleeve, pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Bryter Layter: A Timeless Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    AjrckuftlDecember 13, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

On a whim, I purchased this as an Amazon deal, not really familiar with Nick's music. I'm astonished I went 53 years without discovering his incredible work. Since then, I've bought all three of his albums, read about his heartbreaking life, and now this is among my all-time favorite albums. Each one is brilliant, but Bryter Layter stands out as my top pick. The quality is breathtaking—lush, warm, with fantastic dynamics, much like the songwriting and production. I also own FLAC digital copies, but they lack something compared to this vinyl pressing, which was cut directly from the original analogue master tapes. Truly a beautiful tribute to a remarkably talented young man who deserved far more acclaim in his brief life.

Without a doubt, this record has some of the best sound quality in my collection. And, of course, the music itself is amazing too.

About Nick Drake

Nick Drake, an English musician and accomplished acoustic guitarist, left an indelible mark on the folk and singer-songwriter genres despite his brief career. Born into a creative family in 1948, Drake signed to Island Records at the tender age of 20 while still a student at the University of Cambridge. His debut album, "Five Leaves Left," was released in 1969, followed by "Bryter Layter" in 1971 and the hauntingly beautiful "Pink Moon" in 1972. Although his albums did not achieve commercial success during his lifetime, Drake's introspective lyrics and delicate guitar work have since garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following.

Drake's life was marked by both talent and tragedy. He grappled with mental illness, and sadly, took his own life at the age of 26 in 1974. His music, characterized by its understated elegance and emotional depth, continues to resonate with audiences today. Drake's legacy is managed by Bryter Music, which oversees all matters related to his recordings, music publishing, and various media projects. His story is one of quiet brilliance and enduring influence, making Nick Drake a figure of enduring fascination in the music world.
