Product description

Dive into the captivating world of contemporary classical music with Bright Sheng's "The Phoenix," a compelling album released in March 2009 under the prestigious Naxos label. This album is a testament to the innovative compositional prowess of Shanghai-born, Michigan-based composer Bright Sheng, who masterfully weaves distinctively Chinese experiences into his work.

"The Phoenix" is a four-track journey that spans approximately 70 minutes, featuring the Seattle Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Schwarz, with Shana Blake Hill adding her vocal prowess. The album opens with "Red Silk Dance," a piece that sets the stage with its intricate orchestration and cultural depth. "Tibetan Swing" follows, offering a unique blend of traditional and modern elements that showcase Sheng's versatility. "The Phoenix" itself is a standout track, co-commissioned by the Seattle Symphony and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen tale, it is a powerful and evocative piece that highlights the orchestra's dynamic range. The album concludes with "H'un (Lacerations): In Memoriam 1966-1976," a poignant and reflective composition that pays tribute to a significant period in history.

Bright Sheng's ability to blend cultural narratives with contemporary classical music makes "The Phoenix" a standout release in the genre. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Bright Sheng

Bright Sheng is a renowned Chinese-born American composer, pianist, and conductor, celebrated for his profound and evocative musical compositions. Born in Shanghai on December 6, 1955, Sheng's journey began with his mother as his first piano teacher, igniting a lifelong passion for music. He moved to New York in 1982, where he has since made significant contributions to the classical music world.

Sheng's works are performed by major orchestras and esteemed musicians globally, including the Orchestre de Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and renowned soloists like Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax. His compositions, which often draw inspiration from his Chinese heritage, have earned him numerous accolades, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 2001 and two Pulitzer Prize nominations. Sheng's music is known for its rich melodic substance, sometimes likened to the "flying song" folk style from southern China.

Currently, Sheng holds the prestigious title of Leonard Bernstein Distinguished University Professor, continuing to inspire and educate the next generation of musicians. His stage, orchestral, chamber, and vocal works are performed regularly, showcasing his unique voice and deep musical insight.
