Product description

Dive into the eclectic and captivating world of John Cale with "Artificial Intelligence," a masterful blend of art rock, baroque pop, and proto-punk that showcases the Welsh musician's versatility and innovation. Released on September 6, 1985, via Beggars Banquet Records, this tenth solo studio album is a testament to Cale's enduring influence in the music scene.

Recorded at the iconic Strongroom Studios in London, "Artificial Intelligence" features a dynamic lineup, including Cale's backing band, The Faction, and a handful of additional musicians who bring depth and texture to the album's nine tracks. The album spans a concise yet impactful 42 minutes, delivering a rich tapestry of sounds that highlight Cale's unique artistic vision.

From the opening track "Everytime the Dog Barks" to the closing notes of "Satellite Walk," each song on "Artificial Intelligence" offers a distinct flavor while maintaining a cohesive narrative. Standout tracks like "Dying on the Vine" and "The Sleeper" showcase Cale's lyrical prowess and melodic ingenuity, while "Chinese Takeaway - Hong Kong 1997 medley" adds a touch of experimental flair. The album's diverse genres and styles make it a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers to John Cale's discography.

"Artificial Intelligence" is not just another album in John Cale's extensive catalog; it's a bold statement that underscores his ability to push musical boundaries. Whether you're a fan of art rock, baroque pop, or experimental music, this album offers a rich and rewarding experience that stands the test of time.

This is a 1996 Reissue released as a LP.

definitely my top pick for an album cover, and easily one of my all-time faves. It's a strong 4/5, even with 'Fadeaway Tomorrow' being a bit weak. 'Dying on the Vine' makes up for that skip, and 'Satellite Walk' grew on me too. It starts off weird, but the longer it plays, the better it gets, I reckon.

  • Cale's Gloomy Love Album

    3 out of 5 stars
    Racikzig1103August 19, 2024United States🇺🇸

Black Rose could've been a more fitting title for this album, as it's quite gloomy. Most tracks, either directly or indirectly, appear to tackle love gone awry. Nobody crafts a biting, sarcastic pop tune like Cale, and here he seems to be enduring the ups and downs with the rest of us. I'm genuinely puzzled why this album is so widely criticized. Cale's fans seem as grumpy and stubborn as the man himself. To my ears, 7 out of 9 of these tracks are quintessential Cale and actually remind me a lot of his moody, introspective later work like Black Acetate and Hobosapien. As for the remaining two, Satellite Walk sounds like a deliberate parody of New Wave music in general and a possible jab at one Mr. L. Reed specifically, while Chinese Takeaway might've been better named Chinese Throwaway, as it's little more than a cynical throwaway. Funny enough, those who dislike this album seem to universally point to that song as the only real highlight. It really makes me question if we're listening to the same album.
