Product description

In 1994, Johnny Cash, the legendary country singer, released "American Recordings," marking a significant comeback in his illustrious career. This album, the 81st of his career, was produced by Rick Rubin and released under the American Recordings label, formerly known as Def American. It signaled a resurgence for Cash, who had faced declining record sales in the preceding decades despite his iconic status in American music.

"American Recordings" is a stripped-down, intimate collection of 13 tracks, each lasting a total of 41 minutes. The album features a blend of traditional country songs, murder ballads, and late-night confessionals, all accompanied by the raw power of Cash's voice and the simplicity of an acoustic guitar. Standout tracks include "Delia's Gone," "The Beast In Me," and "Down There By The Train," each showcasing Cash's unique storytelling ability and deep, resonant vocals.

The album begins with "Delia's Gone," a haunting ballad about a man who kills his unfaithful wife, followed by "Let The Train Blow The Whistle," a song that captures the essence of a train journey. "The Beast In Me" is a powerful track that delves into the darker aspects of human nature, while "Why Me Lord" offers a moment of spiritual reflection. The album also includes a unique introduction to "Oh, Bury Me Not" with "A Cowboy's Prayer," adding a touch of folk tradition to the collection.

"American Recordings" is a testament to Johnny Cash's enduring talent and his ability to reinvent himself. The album's raw, unadorned production allows Cash's voice to take center stage, making it a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers to his music. The album's release in April 1994 marked the beginning of a six-part series that continued until 2010, each album further cementing Cash's legacy as a true icon of American music.

This 2018 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Cash's Late Masterpiece Reintroduced

    3 out of 5 stars
    CuacDaapfnJanuary 10, 2026United Kingdom🇬🇧

Imagine this: you're a 60-year-old iconic country-folk singer, nearing the end of your career, sitting in a dimly lit backstage area after a concert. Suddenly, a young, wild-bearded man, about half your age, approaches you. You recognize him... ah, yes. He's the guy who produced "Walk This Way," that strange song by Aerosmith and some rappers that came out a few years back. An odd mix, but it became a hit. To your surprise, this bearded youngster expresses interest in producing your next album! Initially, you're hesitant. You're not sure he'll grasp your music, but hey, you've got nothing to lose, so you decide to give it a shot with this hippie. The outcome? The beginning of a lifelong friendship and a series of albums that will be considered among your best work. These albums honor your past while also pushing your boundaries, making you cover songs by Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and even Glenn Danzig! Because, as history has shown, the first of these albums, fittingly titled "American Recordings," remains a late masterpiece in Johnny Cash's discography. You need to hear the sincerity pouring out of Johnny's voice and guitar, how his voice cracks here and there, yet still commands attention with its deep, resonant tone as he sings about everything, from the humorous "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" to the reflective, spiritual, and mournful tones of "Why Me Lord?", "Redemption", or "Oh Bury Me Not", contrasting with the harsh and grim lyrics of "Deliah's Gone"… as only a man who has lived a long, full life can. "American Recordings" brilliantly reintroduced Johnny Cash to a generation of music lovers who didn't quite realize how much they owed to his attitude, talent, and authenticity.

The whole collection of The American Recordings is absolutely brilliant, and every single time, no matter what I'm up to, I have to pause and just immerse myself in the music. I've found the CDs to be top-notch quality, they play seamlessly, the audio is superb, Johnny Cash's vocals are stunning, and the recordings are bursting with incredible vitality. The booklets are well-made and visually appealing. My only wish is to have a vinyl version, as it's the best for my ears. I highly recommend it for listening. Enjoy...Played on: Denon DCD-1550AR, Digital Coax, Technics SU-G700M2, Yamaha NS-777

  • Disappointing Pressing, Great Album

This album deserves so much better. The pressing is truly disappointing. I'm really hoping for a better repress that does this fantastic album the justice it deserves.

To start, take out the black innersleeve and swap it for one with a poly lining. Next, give the record a good clean with disco antistat. Final step: Bask in the joy of a pop-free record, crafted by a true expert :)

About Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash, born John Ray Cash, was an iconic American singer-songwriter whose deep, resonant voice and compelling storytelling made him a legendary figure in country music. Known for his distinctive bass-baritone vocals and the train-like rhythms of his backing band, the Tennessee Three, Cash's music often explored themes of sorrow, redemption, and moral struggle. His signature all-black stage attire earned him the nickname "Man in Black," reflecting his rebellious spirit and evolving personal journey. Cash's career spanned decades, from his early hits like "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues" to his later, more introspective works. His live performances at prisons, including the legendary "At Folsom Prison" album, showcased his unique ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. Beyond music, Cash was also an actor and author, leaving an indelible mark on American culture. His influence transcended genres, bridging the gap between country and rock 'n' roll, and his impact continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
