I gotta say, I don't see what the fuss is about. My version is spotless and sounds awesome.
Utterly trash pressing of the highest caliber. If the rest of the Candid reissue collection is going to be pressed by the same facility, I'm done. Random bursts of noise throughout the first side, horribly off-center on both sides. Crackling, noisy trash. It's a shame because the mastering is fantastic!
To my knowledge, the Victor reissue is the sole CD version of "We Insist!" that doesn't have glaring audio issues. The liner notes reveal that this Japanese reissue was sourced from Max Roach's personal master tapes. Interestingly, Candid seems to have misplaced their own master tapes (or perhaps Roach never handed them over), leading to sound distortion problems in all of their CD releases of the album, making them sound like they were ripped from vinyl. The 2011 Poll Winners Records reissue uses the Candid CD as its source, so it inherits the same distortion. Therefore, if you're looking to experience this incredible album on CD, the Victor release is the one to choose.
Snagged this gem for just $11 and I'm over the moon! I won't be playing the vocal tracks all that often (they're a bit too intense for everyday listening), but the quality of the pressing is superb! The cover is well-crafted, the 180g vinyl is perfectly flat, not a single crackle or defect, and it cost me a third of what current reissues go for, yet it's three times better. I know it's a GZ pressing, but this one's exceptional! Go for it!
This edition is fantastic, and the music feels as fresh and impactful as ever. The sound is loud, crisp, and features a punchy bass. It's as good as you can expect given the original recording's quality. I considered waiting for the standard black vinyl, but I was drawn to the idea of a clear pressing. Clear vinyl, reflecting the essence of these tracks. It's a big deal to finally have dynamic mastering for future generations. I've been anticipating this for years and was truly satisfied.
