  • Tuba Shines in Stereo

    3 out of 5 stars
    SavoxSuhaz65 December 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is fantastic in my opinion, I genuinely enjoy the tuba most of the time. It's not your typical Bop instrument, but I believe that's what makes this record stand out. That said, I'm puzzled as to why they reissued the mono mix. There's a certain allure to it since finding good mono versions of these albums can be quite challenging. Perhaps a decent version doesn't even exist apart from the original. But even when you compare the mixes just on streaming, the mono version doesn't hold a candle to the stereo one. Sure, there's always a debate about preferences when it comes to panning, and that's completely valid. I just don't understand why the mono mix of this record sounds so muddy. It makes the album sound way older than it actually is. The drums, in particular, have that "boxy" sound. If you're a fan of the mono mix and how it sounds, this is definitely an upgrade from the streaming version, but I highly recommend the stereo mix if you're listening to the album for the first time.

  • Tuba Bop: Mono Mix Flawed

    3 out of 5 stars
    LepizMokav95 December 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is fantastic in my opinion, I genuinely enjoy the tuba for the most part. It's certainly not your usual choice for Bop, but I believe it's what makes this record stand out. That being said, I'm puzzled as to why they decided to reissue the mono mix. There's a certain allure to it, I guess, since finding good mono versions of these albums can be quite a challenge. Or perhaps a decent version doesn't even exist apart from the original. But even when you compare the mixes just on streaming, the mono version doesn't hold a candle to the stereo one. I understand that there's always a debate about preferences when it comes to panning, that's absolutely fair. I just can't wrap my head around why the mono mix of this record sounds so muddy. It makes the whole thing sound way older than it really is. The drums, in particular, have that "boxy" sound to them. If you're a fan of the mono and how it sounds, this is definitely an upgrade from the streaming version, but I strongly suggest going for the stereo mix if you're giving the album a first listen.

  • Roach's Masterful Vinyl Shines

    4 out of 5 stars
    qunm_kozazna6 May 2025United States🇺🇸

The pressing quality is pretty good, not too shabby at all. There's minimal surface noise and the vinyl is free from any sort of marks. The music is mastered well and sounds fantastic. Max Roach shines both as a sideman and when he's leading the band.

Great record quality, really had a good time listening to it. The tuba grew on me by side B. :)
