In my opinion, Virtuoso (#1) stands out as one of Joe's finest pieces. The Virtuoso series comprises six albums over a few years, and I'd say the first two are the most impressive. This is the third installment, and while it showcases the same polished, skilled performances Joe is renowned for, I can't help but feel they might have wrapped up the series after the second album. The track choices here are noticeably weaker, and Joe seems to play it safer. Plus, there's a clear lack of the passion that ignited the first two records. If you're aiming to complete your Virtuoso collection, then yes, you'll want this one. But if you're looking for Joe's peak performances, the first two albums are where it's at. 2.75 stars.
This particular album from the Virtuoso series stands out…it's Joe improvising on his own compositions, made just for this release. It's a bit more subdued and reflective, but the guitar mastery is still incredible throughout. Coincidentally, Mel Bay released a book with transcriptions of these solos around the same time. It's definitely one of my top picks and deserves a perfect 5-star rating.
