  • Van Morrison's Blues Triumph

    5 out of 5 stars
    bctaordaele12 November 2025United States🇺🇸

In “Too Long In Exile,” Van Morrison croons with the delight of a youngster clutching a shiny new coin, and in the very next breath, he's basking in the sun, perfectly at ease with where his journey has led him. This time around, he's not just treating us to something fresh and extraordinary, but he's finally at peace enough to cater to his own tastes too. And what we receive is, without a doubt, some of the most exquisite music Van Morrison has ever crafted. He must have struck gold, because that fortunate coin of his sparked what would become one of his most triumphant albums commercially speaking. This is a Blues album through and through, with no in-between ... though he's creatively reshaped the framework, in his unique way, to revamp not just his earlier works, but those of Sonny Boy Williamson, Doc Pomus, Brook Benton, and many others. Just listen to the ‘Round Robin’ take on the classic Them tune “Gloria” with Howlin’ Wolf, and you'll be left astonished at what you're hearing. Nobody saw this version coming, not even Van, as he says, “It just sort of happened.” Well, no matter how it transpired, I'm eager for more, and could listen to that track alone endlessly. Van has gathered a dream team of musicians to rival any ensemble ever assembled. It takes a rare gift to inspire such loyalty, as the greats and near-greats seemed to be drawn to him, eager to share his perspective on the sounds they cherished most ... and on this release, he doesn't let anyone down, blending classic, time-honored songs with several new numbers, in the blues tradition, reflecting his stance on the music industry. Not only is this album a musical masterpiece, the production is equally impeccable, leaving virtually nothing to be desired. Van seems to be coaxing the notes for these tunes right out of his fingertips, and it's astonishing how he managed to find an ending for any of them, as each song could effortlessly stretch on for hours or seamlessly flow into the next. As a Van Morrison enthusiast, there's no way you can overlook this album. As a blues aficionado, this record demands to be acknowledged on multiple levels. And strangely enough, for some reason, the artwork alone encapsulates and speaks to the significance of the tracks it houses ... this is a monumental body of work, one that will forever challenge Van Morrison in the future.
