  I'm at a loss as to how meticulously Morrison picked the tunes for Roll With The Punches, where he doesn't just perform the music, but rather seems to teleport each track, enveloping and captivating his audience with a vocal range and voice that's simply improved and grown richer over time. I can't possibly persuade you that these songs are laid-back, though if you're a follower of the artist, you know precisely what to anticipate, except that here you receive an indefinable something 'extra' that will echo with you long after the needle has been lifted and the record's been put away. Perhaps that something 'extra' is his steady grooves, his posture, his attitude, and an unyielding bluesy lightness that will have your head nodding from the first song to the last, while your fingers glide over an imaginary piano without a sense of haste, because Van takes his time with each track, perfectly in harmony with his band, delivering a soulful blend of emotional joy that actually sounds as if he's having a fantastic time here. And those songs I mentioned earlier, the medley of “Stormy Monday / Lonely Avenue” written by Doc Pomus and T-Bone Walker will have you down on your knees bearing witness, one hand over your heart, the other raised to the heavens, while his rendition of “Teardrops From My Eyes” penned by Ruby Toombs' pours down with tearful intoxication, and if the Jimmy Rushing & Count Basie track “Goin' To Chicago” doesn’t crack every floorboard in your living room, then there’s something seriously amiss with your stereo system. Yet distinguishing his five originals from the ten others is nearly unfeasible, because Van possesses every note he lays down here, with dare I say, his version of the Sam Cooke song “Bring It On Home To Me,” sounds fresh and full of life crafted in blues. But Van doesn’t accomplish this all by himself, this album is finger snapping tight, and as solid as a brick wall, with contributors that include Paul Jones, Chris Farlowe, Georgie Fame, Jeff Beck and Jason Rebello … and one can only hope that this lineup will be backing his live shows, though that wish does seem a bit improbable.1.
