  This is absolutely amazing. I haven't tried any other versions, so I can't compare. My copy came in mint condition, not a single scratch.

• Nino-Hernes Mastery Shines

  I must have been fortunate, as my gatefold arrived in perfect condition, with no flaws at all. I'm not sure what went wrong with others, but I do believe their complaints. Universal and/or RTI should really improve their quality control to prevent defective copies from being shipped. Also, this is one of the quietest records I've purchased this year, so I'm quite surprised by reports of excessive surface noise. However, I always give every record I get (new or used) an ultrasonic cleaning before playing it, which might explain why our experiences differ so much. I'm not sure why that is, but I do wish UMG/RTI had done a better job with quality control for this release, because it sounds amazing. Before this Vinylphyle series, I didn't know anything about Joe Nino-Hernes, but he definitely has my attention now. After listening to both Exodus and now this, it's clear that he has exceptional talent in the studio. This is about as good as a lo-fi album like this can sound (in my opinion) and much of that is thanks to how Nino-Hernes mastered it. There's a strong balance to the sound that I find lacking in most other versions of this record, which is no small achievement. The way the band recorded the songs on this album made it easy for certain elements to get lost during the louder, brighter parts. To be clear, that issue is still present on this cut, but it's handled much more gracefully than I've ever heard before. Even during the nearly deafening parts of Heroin, the soundstage remains open enough that I can pick out more details than ever before. Many other tracks on this disc show similar levels of resolution. There's a clarity here that I honestly didn't think was possible for this album, and it's now my preferred way to listen to it. I don't know how well this series is doing financially, but I hope it's successful enough for Universal to continue with more releases. I've really enjoyed what we've gotten so far, and I hope they work with Nino-Hernes again. I think this could be a winning combination, similar to what we've seen with Kevin Gray and Rhino.

  Loud pressing. Got a fresh copy but it crackled and popped all through the record. Packaging with the book was neat, but the vinyl wasn't so good.

• Excellent Sound Quality Despite Packaging

  The album sounds fantastic, which is what truly matters. The gatefold sleeve is a bit oddly oversized, so it doesn't fit perfectly in a standard MOFI archival outer sleeve, even though the dual album Atlantic 45 of Loaded I got from Acoustic Sounds fits just fine. I also noticed some still seams at the top. It came in an oversized box filled with lots of shredded cardboard. It seems secure, but bits of that shredded cardboard ended up in the outer plastic and all over the gatefold. I would have preferred a simpler, less messy packing solution. Overall, I'm super happy because the sound quality is excellent on my system. It replaced a poor copy I had before. My setup includes a VPI Scout into West 2.2 phono, then to a Schiit Saga pre-amp, into a Vidar amplifier, and out to Ascend Acoustics Sierra LX speakers with a Rhythmik F12 subwoofer.

• Crisp Audio, Glossy Cover

  Excellent pressing, the audio quality is surprisingly crisp and clear when you put it up against the streaming versions. Plus, the glossy cover finish is a nice touch, and the resealable outer sleeve is a great addition.
