The Solo Sessions - Bill Evans

Product Description

Bill Evans, the legendary jazz pianist, invites you into an intimate musical journey with "The Solo Sessions," released on January 1, 1989, under the Concord Jazz label. This captivating album is a testament to Evans' virtuosity and his unique ability to blend cool jazz, bebop, and hard bop into a seamless, soulful experience.

"The Solo Sessions" features Evans alone at the piano, delivering a collection of timeless standards and original compositions. The album opens with a poignant rendition of "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" showcasing Evans' signature lyrical phrasing and harmonic sophistication. The medley of "My Favorite Things / Easy To Love / Baubles, Bangles And Beads" highlights his knack for weaving together disparate melodies into a cohesive whole.

Evans' interpretation of "When I Fall In Love" is a standout track, imbued with a tender, romantic sensibility that only he could convey. The medley of "Spartacus" Love Theme / Nardis" offers a more up-tempo, hard bop flavor, demonstrating Evans' technical prowess and improvisational genius. The album concludes with the classic "April In Paris," a fitting finale that encapsulates the essence of Evans' musical artistry.

Clocking in at just over 41 minutes, "The Solo Sessions" is a concise yet profound exploration of the jazz piano repertoire. Whether you're a longtime fan of Bill Evans or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

This LP was released in 1989.

  • Evans Studio Work: Mixed

    3 out of 5 stars
    hifaCF_7 July 2025United States🇺🇸

I shelled out over $40 for a NM copy of this, having never spotted it in any stores, I figured it was a rare find. Evans' solo studio work here doesn't quite live up to his more daring live stuff. The standout tracks are a really enjoyable take on "My Favorite Things" and a chilling rendition of "When I Fall In Love". It's worth a listen to see his creative range. This Milestone pressing has some noticeable wow, especially on long notes, causing a slow, steady pitch wobble. That's pretty irritating. It's more trouble than it's worth to return it, so I'll hang onto it. 3 stars.
