Swinging Jazz with Exotic Flair

This is a classic Van Gelder "dual mono" production with some truly swinging performances. The recording and mixing are top-notch. Illinois Jacobs on Bassoon is alone worth the ticket, but when he trades riffs with Kenny Burrell, it just adds to the overall groove. The only slight downside is that some of the standards have a bit of an "exotic" arrangement that might feel a tad cheesy to certain listeners - but I'm all for it.

This is a quintessential Van Gelder "dual mono" production. The performances are full of swing, captured and blended beautifully. Illinois' bassoon playing is alone worth the ticket, but his exchanges with Kenny Burrell really amp up the groove. The only minor issue is that some of the standards have an "exotic" twist that might feel a tad cheesy to certain ears - but I'm all for it.
