  • 45rpm Outperforms 33rpm Again

    4 out of 5 stars
    pozjutb51011 December 2025United States🇺🇸

LET'S COMPARE: 2012 AP 2x45rpm Sterling pressing Vs 2025 Acoustic Sounds 33 ML cut. Both records were Degritter cleaned and put to the test side by side on two identical, well-used AT LP5X turntables. They were hooked up to my Opera Consonance Reference 40 all tube phono stage, which conveniently has dual inputs! I've done quite a few of these comparisons, and I've consistently found that the older AP 45rpm version usually outperforms the newer AS 33rpm. This time was no different, and the 45rpm just edges out the 33rpm. While the overall balance is quite similar, the 45rpm offers more air, more texture, and more dynamic energy. It also has a more centered and open soundstage. The AS 33 seems to favor the right channel a bit and plays as if you're sitting a tad further back. There's not a single aspect of the 33's listening experience that I prefer. It's simply the 45rpm but a bit muted and less lifelike. Still, it's decent on its own, but I see no reason to listen to it when the 45rpm sounds so much better. On the flip side, the newer QRP 180g pressings are a bit quieter than the older, noisier ones from around 2012. Also, the packaging of the old AP issues feels very basic and cheap compared to the glossy, sturdy packaging of the newer pressings. Nothing too surprising about this listening comparison. If I were buying again, I'd go for the AP edition. But I get it, some might think £35 is too much for a record, and the 33rpm might make more sense if budget is a concern.

LET'S COMPARE: 2012 AP 2x45rpm Sterling pressing up against the 2025 Acoustic Sounds 33 1/3 ML cut. Both records were Degritter cleaned and put to the test side by side on two identical AT LP5X turntables, each with the same running hours, feeding into my Opera Consonance Reference 40 all tube phono preamp with its super handy dual inputs! I've done over ten of these comparisons now, and I've consistently found that the older AP 45rpm version usually outperforms the newer AS 33. This time is no different, and the AP just edges it out. While the overall balance is quite similar, the 45rpm has more air, more texture, and more dynamic punch. It also boasts a more centered and open soundstage. The AS 33 seems to favor the right channel a bit and plays as if you're sitting a tad further back. There's not a single aspect of the 33's listening experience that I prefer; it's simply the 45 but a bit muted and less lifelike. Still decent on its own, but I can't see any reason to listen to it when the 45 sounds so much better. On the flip side, the newer QRP 180g pressings are a bit quieter than the older, noisier ones from around 2012, and the packaging of the old AP issues feels very basic and cheap compared to the glossy Stoughton sleeves of the newer pressings. No big surprises in the listening department here. If I were buying all over again, I'd go for the AP edition. But I get it, some folks think £35 is already too much for a record, and the 33 makes a bit of sense if you're on a budget.
