Product Description

Beirut's "The Flying Club Cup" is a captivating journey through the realms of chamber pop, baroque pop, and indie folk, released on October 8, 2007, under Pompeii Records. In just 38 minutes, this album weaves a tapestry of intricate melodies and evocative lyrics that transport the listener to a world of nostalgia and wanderlust.

The album opens with "A Call to Arms," setting the stage for a collection of songs that are as much about storytelling as they are about music. Tracks like "Nantes" and "Guyamas Sonora" showcase Beirut's knack for blending traditional folk elements with modern indie sensibilities, creating a sound that is both timeless and fresh. The title track, "The Flying Club Cup," is a standout, with its layered vocals and lush instrumentation that epitomizes the album's baroque pop essence.

"La Banlieue" and "Cliquot" offer a glimpse into the album's more introspective moments, while "The Penalty" and "Forks and Knives (La Fête)" bring a lively, almost celebratory energy. The album closes with "St. Apollonia," leaving the listener with a sense of completion and a desire to revisit the journey.

"The Flying Club Cup" is a testament to Beirut's artistry, offering a rich and immersive listening experience that stands out in the indie folk genre.

This is a 2019 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Timeless, Emotional, Transportive Sounds

    5 out of 5 stars

This album feels like it belongs at the start of the previous century, with Beirut's music fitting perfectly in a workhouse corner or just outside of it. There's a lot of genuine emotion packed into these tracks. I find these songs akin to Hemingway's short stories—thoughtful and engaging. "Forks and Knives" takes you right to the hospital bed they're singing about (without the actual pain), making you feel like a soldier reflecting on life. Religion also makes an appearance, with lines like "I was standing outside the church door" that truly transport you to that spot! You can't miss the Mexican influence in their music. The word "Chanson" comes to mind too, especially if you've heard Jacques Brel's "Le moribond," which they covered brilliantly on their "Elephant Gun" EP—you'd think they wrote it themselves! Not everyone will appreciate this album, in fact, when I bought it, the guy at the record shop said he hated it, but it turned out to be his biggest seller!

  • Rich, Quiet Pressing

This is a fantastic record pressing. Didn't own the original, but wow, this one's amazing. Super quiet and rich in sound.

  • Journey Through Nantes

    5 out of 5 stars
    PienZH22 May 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is absolutely amazing. It truly takes you on a journey through the streets of Nantes and into the homes of France. The mastering on this record is impeccable, it couldn't be any better. I also want to highlight the back cover, which features some text—not lyrics, but a sort of short story. It's perfectly written and even enhances the listening experience. It's something many people might miss, but it's truly excellent. Overall, I can't find much to criticize about this release. Update: With a new cartridge and a better understanding of vinyl playback, I thought I should add some observations I didn't notice on the first few listens. Firstly, the S's on some tracks are overly pronounced. The first few songs are particularly affected, although "Cliquot" is just fine. I suspect different recording studios or mixes were used, and some songs suffer because of it. Secondly, the pressing isn't entirely quiet. There's definitely some surface noise at times and the occasional pops, but it's not too bad. This also leads to my biggest complaint directed towards the pressing plant—quality control. My copy has clear fingerprints all over it, as well as plenty of scuffs that I assure you did not come from me. Side B even has a big scratch across the entire playing surface, thankfully it plays better than it looks. Some of the sound issues might be due to the lack of quality control, though. After giving it a clean up, I'll update again for any improvements. The dead wax looks really smooth, so I suspect it's more silent than it actually plays at the moment. Amazing pressing. So, so quiet and the sound is just incredible. Very dynamic with such depth, it makes you feel like you’re right there in front of the band, enjoying a live concert. Grand!

  • Vocal Album Standout

Awesome album! I don’t own many vocal records, but this one is a standout in my collection. My LP copy is perfect, no problems at all.
