I'm absolutely in love with this album, this band is amazing, but this particular pressing isn't quite up to par. It's brand new, yet there are scratches on the outside, and little bits of extra vinyl stuck to the record. The inner sleeves were stuck to the records, and the plastic liner peeled right off the paper. Such a disappointment.
I must say, this record sounds fantastic. I wasn't anticipating such high quality from Capitol, but they've really delivered. The pressing is incredibly quiet and the mix/master is top-notch. The packaging could be better, but all in all, this is a solid copy. I've been really enjoying listening to it.
Among The Decemberist's top albums, especially with the two epic song sequences 'The Crane Wife' (drawn from classic Japanese tales) and The Island (inspired by Shakespeare's The Tempest).
The sound quality of this pressing is amazing! At least that's how my copy is. No problems at all.
This album is absolutely one of my all-time favorites, but I must say, the version I initially had had some noticeable pauses between tracks that were best experienced without gaps. I mean, who wants a sudden second of silence between "The Crane Wife 3" and "The Island"? This issue led me to hunt down an actual CD, which, luckily, was super easy to find. Once I got it, I was blown away—literally dropped my jaw, not just because of the seamless playback. I noticed some pretty big differences from the version I was used to. Turns out, this CD is an earlier, less refined master of the TCW. Let me break down every difference I spotted between the CD and the download version. "The Island: Come & See, The Landlord’s Daughter, You’ll Not Feel The Drowning" - Right off the bat, the opening drone on the download version misses a feedback overdub that's on the commercial version and is about a second longer. The biggest difference, though, is at 2:35. On the CD, there are two repeats of the “DUN. DUN. DUN.” part. On the download, there are four. The same goes for the second time around, letting us enjoy the organ glissando more. The download version runs 12:43, while the commercial version is 12:26. "The Perfect Crime #2" - This one sounds way different, probably because it's one of the more processed tracks on the final album. The delay effect on the rhythm guitar is less noticeable. The looped vocals before the chorus fade out earlier and are barely audible. Honestly, I prefer the download version here—it fits better with the rest of the album. "The Crane Wife 1 & 2" - Nothing too drastic, except for the accordion drone and the end, which is about 4 seconds longer on the CD version.
