Product Description

"The Last Shadow Puppets" invite you into a world of orchestral grandeur and poetic lyricism with their debut album, "The Age Of The Understatement." Released on April 19, 2008, under Domino Recording Co., this baroque pop masterpiece clocks in at a concise yet impactful 35 minutes. The album is a collaboration between Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane, blending their unique songwriting styles to create a sound that is both vintage and fresh.

From the opening track "The Age Of The Understatement" to the closing notes of "Time Has Come Again," the album is a journey through a landscape of lush strings, dramatic crescendos, and intimate, confessional lyrics. Standout tracks like "Standing Next To Me" and "My Mistakes Were Made For You" showcase the duo's knack for crafting melodies that are as memorable as they are sophisticated. Meanwhile, "Calm Like You" and "In My Room" offer moments of tender reflection, highlighting the emotional depth of their songwriting.

With its rich instrumentation and timeless appeal, "The Age Of The Understatement" is an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers and nuances with each play. It's a testament to The Last Shadow Puppets' ability to blend the old with the new, creating a sound that is uniquely their own. Whether you're a fan of baroque pop or simply appreciate well-crafted music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

This is a 2015 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Vinyl Sounds Superior

    5 out of 5 stars
    Puzw905014 October 2025United States🇺🇸

I own the original 2008 CD version and I've got to admit, this 2008 vinyl release sounds even better and clearer. It's a fantastic pressing on heavy vinyl. I don't see why they needed to put this on two discs though: the album's only 34 minutes long and it sounds perfect as is.

  • Warped but Playable Album

    3 out of 5 stars
    Fatpaj_Nescgimd10 July 2025United States🇺🇸

This album was purchased brand new but had a slight warp. Upon first play, there were no pops, ticks, or clicks. There's a faint surface noise throughout, but it's not bothersome. This pressing seems a bit congested and has a limited dynamic range, at least to my ears, using a Rega RP1 with a carbon conical stylus. In my view, it doesn't offer any noticeable audible improvements over my CD copy.

  • Orchestra Needs More Space

    4 out of 5 stars
    Nehxeji_Qazipkuz8 April 2025United States🇺🇸

This is a so-so pressing. The orchestra is alright but it could be way better. They oughta do a two disc version to let all those details have more space to shine.

  • Debut Album: Shadow Puppets Shine

    4 out of 5 stars
    zeskasbo29 December 2024United States🇺🇸

This debut album is quite impressive. The Last Shadow Puppets' sound, to me, strongly echoes that of Arctic Monkeys. I guess this isn't shocking given Alex Turner's involvement, but Miles Kane's presence hasn't significantly altered the Arctic Monkeys' style, in my view. Maybe they've got a bit more of a gritty edge, but it feels like Turner is the main driving force behind this album's production. However, the inclusion of the London Metropolitan Orchestra definitely elevates their music and keeps them from blending into the typical britrock crowd. I initially thought this might be a misguided attempt at experimentation after reading the liner notes, but they've truly nailed it. Unlike some bands, they incorporate orchestration tastefully, using it to enhance the album rather than overloading it with excessive and unnecessary instruments, as some bands tend to do. Actually, their orchestral arrangements are where they truly excel, giving their sound a refreshing twist for those tired of standard britrock. Overall, a solid debut album. 4/5

  • Clarify 180gm Record Weight

    4 out of 5 stars
    ryipdwaplis22 December 2024United States🇺🇸

I'm pretty confident this is the copy I own, as the Matrix / Runout details match and I purchased it new right before the holidays. But I'm not convinced it's an 180gm disc. It feels lighter than my other 180gm records, and there's no mention of the weight anywhere – which is odd, since labels usually make a big deal out of that sort of thing. Can someone clarify this for me?
