This pressing is an absolute triumph! It's truly deepened my love for an album that once left me a bit perplexed. I've got two other versions - a US first pressing and a Rhino CD reissue from the early 2000s. I used to think this album was a bit too bold and messy, like Aretha was overreaching and the production was a tad heavy-handed for its time. But maybe my tastes have matured, because I found this Rhino Red to be an absolute joy from start to finish. I've come to truly admire the vocal work, the variety of styles, and the arrangements more than ever. The bonus 45 that comes with it sounds fantastic and is a real treat. Go ahead and grab it, and when it arrives, pour yourself a little scotch, take a sip, and lean back for a bluesy, boozy journey. You'll be in for a glorious 30 minutes of pure escape.
The album's sound quality is fantastic, the mix is spot on, but wow, my copy is super noisy. There's a ton of crackles and pops, even after giving it a good clean. I'm gonna hunt down a better version of this.
In my opinion, this recording isn't very good. Aretha's voice is too far back, with excessive reverb and poor equalization. The treble is way too high overall! I looked at a digital version and it's pretty much the same. What a shame because it's a great set of songs.
