START OF THE finish for this group on this "too shiny, over cooked" studio album. Packed with stinkers, missteps and fluff. The drumming on this "three-legged cat" just plain blows (bass ain't much better). Nirvana - Bleach dropped the same year made this band instantly outdated.
All in all, Beggars Arkive have nailed it with their The Cult reissues. I started with 'Love' on that see-through red vinyl, but it was full of crackles and pops, so I was a bit doubtful about the rest. However, 'The Cult' on white vinyl sounded amazing, so I decided to give Sonic Temple and Ceremony a shot. Sound-wise, I'm no expert, but they all sound pretty great to me. They do tend to arrive a bit dusty, so a good clean is in order, but I haven't had any issues with warped or scratched records, or damaged packaging from this label yet. I rated this 4/5 because it doesn't come with lyric inserts. Ceremony isn't gatefold but includes lyrics, while Sonic Temple is gatefold but lacks lyrics...weird, right? For the price I paid (£28), it's pretty fair, considering new coloured double LPs usually go for around £34+. I'd definitely recommend it.
This is a fantastic pressing. I also own the 2019 Beggars Banquet 30th Anniversary edition. It's not a bad press, but this one certainly has a better quality mix. Even though that one is pressed on thicker vinyl and spread over 2 discs. The clarity and dynamics of this original are truly outstanding.
These LPs sound fantastic, with the remastering and cutting really letting the music shine. The drums and bass are particularly impressive, pounding and throbbing rather than being compressed and buried. The vinyl itself is completely silent.
Giving this another shot: this box set is clearly just about making money. The vinyl feels cheap, the cassette sounds terrible, and WHERE'S THE DOWNLOAD?! The CD box even has more songs for less money. MAKE IT LIKE THAT!!
