Right up there with CURTIS and SUPERFLY, ROOTS stands as one of Mayfield's top solo works. I've forever been a fan of the production on this album; it's got this rich yet tight feel, even with the odd string and horn touches. This is a 1971 version, offering solid highs and lows, plus a wide, open sound. My copy's got a tiny scratch that causes some ticks (though no skips) for around 40 seconds in "Now You're Gone", but apart from that, it plays smooth and clear with minimal surface noise. The sleeve's pretty thin and textured, with the spine on the back, and there ain't no print on the spine.
Absolutely winderful! Marvelous, I tell you. A delightful, regular weight vinyl with a gorgeous color variant, all on the classic Curtom label. It's a Faithfull recreation of the 1971 version, and the sound? Wow, just wow. A must-have for any vinyl collection!
These quadrophonic mixes from Rhino are absolutely fantastic! I'm really enjoying them.
This appears to be a subpar, unofficial version. The audio is dull and tiring to listen to, and the cover, where you can still see the “original ‘3-D’ cardboard design in certain spots,” is a shoddy effort to mimic the original feel. Steer clear of it if possible.
The audio quality is absolutely amazing, just as you'd hope from a top-notch vinyl pressing... Super flat with incredibly quiet vinyl, thumbs up! The dynamics and soundstage are spot on, 10/10, thumbs up, big smile!
