Amazing production, this soundstage has it all – bass that goes on forever, crystal clear mids & highs. The vinyl is perfectly flat, super quiet with incredible dynamics. It's pure audiophile quality at 180 grams, thumbs up 👌
This is an amazingly well-made pressing of one of the most iconic soul albums ever, proving that they can create crisp, high-quality colored vinyl when they handle it right. It's definitely worth the pricey international shipping to snag this copy... I'll second what others have said, though, that the orchestral tracks feel a tad rushed...
I find myself in agreement with muthubuntu regarding the bass on this reissue, which tends to dominate the rest of the music, which is a pity because apart from that, this is a fantastic sounding reissue. You need to turn up the volume to truly appreciate it, but this unfortunately accentuates the heavy, pounding bass that's prevalent throughout much of the album. That being said, I must say the vocals sound clearer than on any other pressing I've encountered, and there's excellent clarity to a lot of the other instruments. However, as a whole listening experience, I prefer the Run Out Groove version which sounds more balanced; it has a more prominent mid-range, a rawness to the horns, and overall provides a more satisfying listening experience than this Rhino Reserve version. For some background, I have owned a OG US (Monarch), OG UK, Keep On Keeping On boxset and Run Out Groove version of this album.[Tested on: Rega P3 with Exact cart, Rego Mini phono stage, Rega I/O Amp, Elac Debut B6.2 speakers]
I find myself in agreement with muthubuntu regarding the bass on this release, which tends to dominate the rest of the music, a real pity since apart from that, this reissue sounds fantastic. To truly appreciate it, you need to turn up the volume, but this unfortunately accentuates the heavy, booming bass that's prevalent throughout the record. That said, I must say the vocals sound crisper than on any other pressing I've encountered, and there's a wonderful clarity to much of the other instrumentation. Still, as a whole, I prefer the Run Out Groove version which offers a more balanced sound; it boasts a more pronounced mid-range, a rawness to the horns, and overall provides a more satisfying listening experience than this Rhino Reserve version. Just to give you some background, I've owned a OG US (Monarch), OG UK, Keep On Keeping On boxset and Run Out Groove version of this album. I'm in agreement with muthubuntu that the bass on this reissue is so prominent that it nearly drowns out the rest of the music, which is a real bummer because, apart from that, it's a fantastic sounding reissue. You've got to turn up the volume to truly appreciate it, but unfortunately, this also amplifies the heavy, pounding bass that's prevalent throughout most of the album. That said, I must admit the vocals sound clearer than on any other pressing I've come across, and there's a wonderful clarity to a lot of the other instruments as well. But when it comes to overall enjoyment, I'd have to say I prefer the Run Out Groove version; it's more balanced, with a more noticeable mid-range and a certain rawness to the horns, which makes for a more satisfying listening experience than this Rhino Reserve version. Just to give you some background, I've owned a OG US (Monarch), OG UK, Keep On Keeping On boxset, and Run Out Groove version of this album.[Tested on: Rega P3 with Exact cart, Rego Mini phono stage, Rega I/O Amp, Elac Debut B6.2 speakers]
