★★★★★ (5/5) This is a fantastic pressing and a prime example of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series executed perfectly. My copy is utterly flat, plays with minimal noise, and is practically free from any clicks or pops. The surface noise is barely there, letting the music shine. Sound-wise, this pressing offers a vast soundstage with that classic hard left/right panning you'd expect from early 1960s Rudy Van Gelder stereo recordings, yet the imaging stays intact and captivating, not disjointed. The instruments sound incredible throughout. Hank Mobley’s tenor sax has a rich, warm tone, Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet cuts through with clarity and punch without being harsh, and the rhythm section sits just behind the horns, giving it that intimate small-club feel. The bass is deep and well-defined, piano and drums are crisp and well-balanced, and the dynamics are lively and engaging. I’ve come across some user reports mentioning distortion or pressing problems, but I haven’t noticed any distortion on my copy. Maybe I just got a great pressing, but in my setup, this record sounds clean, open, and natural from beginning to end. Based on my experience, this is a superb modern reissue and a must-have for anyone wanting to own Roll Call without hunting down a pricey original.
Incredible tunes and it sounds amazing. You can't find much better than this record!
I don't get the glowing reviews. The sound is indeed better than my Scorpio Repress BUT my copy had tons of distortion (Tracks A2&A3). Returning it to the seller.
Oh my goodness, this is fantastic! From beginning to end, it's absolutely brilliant. Everybody should have this!
Amazing album, no pops or hiss. Super energetic performance. It's a fantastic listen. I'm particularly fond of the bass solos. Paul Chambers is incredible *****
