  • Queensrÿche's Triumphant Return

    5 out of 5 stars
    zegmeb7 December 2024United States🇺🇸

For ages, I've been a devoted follower of the progressive metal band Queensrÿche, despite their name's affected umlaut. (It's a metalhead thing, you know.) Back in the '90s, my buddy Archie introduced me to their music. (Truly, sharing tunes is the ultimate friendship gift.) However, I've not kept up with them since their 1997 album "Hear In The Now Frontier." So, I was thrilled to check out their 2013 self-titled release, especially on vinyl! The sticker on the cover proclaims "A RETURN TO FORM." Had they strayed musically while I wasn't paying attention? Was my lack of support somehow their downfall? If so, I'm ready to dive back in, support their music, and spread their stellar metal message. Their 1988 masterpiece "Operation: Mindcrime" is often hailed as one of the greatest heavy metal concept albums ever. I'd go further and say it's one of the best concept albums of all time, any genre. (Remember when folks actually listened to whole albums?) So, my expectations were sky-high. Within the first few notes of the second track, "Where Dreams Go To Die" (the first track being just an intro), I was relieved to hear that if Queensrÿche had lost their way, they'd certainly found it again. They sounded phenomenal on vinyl. The bass was powerful, deep, and commanding—only vinyl can deliver that kind of sound. Apparently, there'd been some "unrest" in the band (or should I say, a civil war?), leading to a lawsuit and lineup changes. The new lead vocalist, Todd La Torre, delivered soaring, clear, and anthemic vocals. The shift from Geoff Tate's vocals seemed seamless—it hadn't altered the band's overall sound. Scott Rockenfield's drumming was as crisp and explosive as ever. Overall, the entire band sounded incredibly tight and cohesive. Such turmoil could've broken them up—I'm glad it didn't. They seemed stronger than ever. I'd forgotten how much I genuinely loved Queensrÿche—I hadn't listened to them in ages. I'm also delighted they've embraced vinyl fans with a unique, well-produced, and mastered product. It's so satisfying when things are done right. (It warms my heart.) As a special treat for vinyl enthusiasts, the LP includes two extra live tracks (Queen Of The Reich & En Force) not found on the CD. The album came in a stunning, darkly ominous gatefold jacket featuring their iconic logo, along with a CD and a 180g LP pressed in a cool silver swirl vinyl. The inner sleeve had pictures of the five band members and the lyrics to all the songs. The record had average signal strength (-6.0 dB) and was incredibly quiet with virtually no surface noise, clicks, or pops. The recording had minimal dynamic range compression (average score of +0.3 as measured by DRC-Meter). In comparison, my processed version had a score of +2.0, and the included CD was aggressively compressed, with an average score of +6.4! This is the highest score I've ever measured with DRC-Meter. I thoroughly enjoyed this album, head-banging with wild abandon, and give it a resounding 5 out of 5 stars!

  • Grey Vinyl Sounds Amazing

    5 out of 5 stars
    Cauf_dco_yakyuxn26 June 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

The tunes are absolutely fantastic, we're all aware of that, but I'm focusing on this specific release. The grey swirl vinyl edition. It's got a fantastic sound, honestly most colored vinyls don't quite hit the mark for me but this one's top-notch, and it's loud too. It comes with a gatefold cover and the CD's tucked in a clear sleeve. You really can't ask for much more than that.
