High and Dry stands out as Def Leppard's finest work, with Pyromania hot on its heels. The former wins out due to its raw, youthful energy, while the latter showcases a refined and professional touch. If you're a fan of the Mutt Lange sound, you're in for a treat here—he didn't hold back in crafting a rock and roll chart-topper. I feel like the albums that followed this one took a bit of a dive, with too much polish sucking the life out of a band that was all about hard rockin'.There's so much high-end shimmer in this album that I have to engage a low pass filter to avoid ear fatigue on my system. The instruments are well-recorded and mixed, with countless layers of each instrument. This isn't some Kinks record—there's plenty of low end to get your subwoofer pumping. Some of the low mids have been cut back to prevent boominess, a nice touch. This is my original copy that I bought back in '83 with my allowance. I still have my ticket stub and concert shirt from this tour, size Medium, lol. Those were the days.4 and 1/2 stars. Highly recommended.
Naturally, the first disc is a timeless piece, but the second live disc is just as brilliant. I'm surprised the record label didn't put it out (you'd think they'd milk it for all it's worth), during those four long years between 'Pyro.' and 'Hysteria'. Definitely, one of the most incredible live albums/performances I've ever listened to. The band is absolutely on fire; there's so much energy and life. The songs are quicker and heavier than their studio counterparts, yet they still keep their melody.
Don't be deceived by the usual Canadian stamp, the VOG-1-3319 Vertigo edition is a hidden treasure for audiophiles. What's there not to appreciate, mastered by the renowned Bob Ludwig, this vinyl offers amazing clarity. With my tube-hybrid system and Dali speakers, Joe Elliott's voice on 'Foolin'' has a 3D-like depth that digital copies simply can't achieve. All in all, a superb pressing. 4.5 stars.
