Musically, this album is an absolute masterpiece. The sound quality is phenomenal, I could scoop it up with a spoon. It's a dead silent record with an incredibly wide sound stage.
The sound feels squashed, with a fake, overly worked-on vibe. It's missing that natural flow and openness. Even with the great tracks, it just seems like a typical digital-to-vinyl transfer.
DJ/Producer Dave Aude reworks "Brand New Day," "Desert Rose," and "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free." Some long time Sting fans may not care for these dance-oriented new productions, but I find them a fun listen. Every song on the disc has great quality and Sting's vocals are still top notch. You can tell it was a well thought out project. You won't be disappointed.
Sting's tunes recycled. I'm really into this album, but the sound on side one feels a bit squashed. Side two's the winner here. Shame, 'cause side one's got that iconic 'Every breath you take'.
I'm referring to the 2 CD deluxe version here, and I strongly suggest ensuring you get this edition. Fortunately, the artwork is quite unique. I often picture A&M telling Sting, "It's time for another best of collection!" (The "Fields of Gold" compilation considered 1984 as the start of Sting's solo career, making 2019 the 35th anniversary.) But in my fantasy scenario, Sting responds, "No! I've got a better plan!" Inspired by his powerful live band, he visits various studios between tour dates and records the tracks on disc 1. Except for the first three songs, which Dave Aud covers in an electronic gloss, that's exactly what it sounds like to me. Some background: Since recruiting Guitar virtuoso Dominic Miller and ex-Zappa drummer Vinny Colaiuta in 1990, Sting has been an outstanding live performer. Drummers, keyboardists, and second guitarists have come and gone, but Dominic Miller has remained Sting's right-hand man, creative partner, and occasional co-writer. Miller is an incredibly versatile musician, capable of delivering jazz, hard rock, folk, or Latin styles as needed. If John Q. Public didn't attend a concert, they only caught glimpses of this band on FM concert broadcasts and the 5 live tracks on the 1993 "Demolition Man" EP. There was a low-key release of a live DVD from 1999, with distribution varying by country. I saw Sting in 2000, and it was an amazing night. In 2001, news of an upcoming live album surfaced, and I eagerly awaited a full-length memento of the red-hot Jazz/Rock/Funk steamroller I'd seen in Manchester. Oh boy, was I let down! "All this time" was fussy re-arrangements played at a private show for a tiny invited audience. My search continued. 1986's "Bring On The Night" was the sound of a man trying too hard to hide from what he did best. Of course, there were brilliant moments from Kenny Kirkland, but it was all too smooth and clean... The live juggernaut sagged slightly with the 2003 Sacred Love tour but was fully restored with 2005's Broken Music tour. I remember seeing the first reports and reviews of the Broken Music tour online. I couldn't believe my eyes at the fantasy set lists and two-guitar lineup. I waited and hoped in vain for the tour to come to the UK, but at least we got a glimpse of this band on the Live 8 TV broadcast playing "Driven To Tears," and it was everything I'd imagined. While A&M slept, bootleggers made the most of the extremely popular (and rightly so) Warsaw 2005 show and the poignant Bataclan reopening with Henri Padovani's guest spot. Fast forward to 2019, and we finally have "My Songs"! Skip past the first three Dave Aude-produced tracks, and you have the sound of a Rock Band playing live, full of energy, like a very good radio session. The first half of Disc 2 (from German and Italian shows in 2019) is even stronger, and the second half of Disc 2, recorded in Paris in 2017, is pretty close to being a perfect live album.
