Emerging from the 'New Wave' and 'Punk' scene, Elvis Costello has always been a critic's darling, despite his rather egocentric nature and less-than-stellar voice. With looks stolen from Buddy Holly, a name borrowed from Elvis Presley, and an attitude reminiscent of Steve Allen, Costello has always been a chameleon, shifting his image and sound to stay relevant. His distinctive, yet often grating, vocal inflections have made him a polarizing figure in the music world. Having lived through the 'Punk' and 'New Wave' eras, I recall Costello's early works being labeled as 'Punk' when they were, in fact, more of an awkward take on 'Blue Eyed Soul.' His lyrics often come across as misanthropic and less than substantive, with a repetitive quality that can be quite annoying. It's as if he's constantly seeking attention, jumping up and down in the corner, interrupting others. Costello's ego is evident in his actions, such as his infamous appearances on Saturday Night Live. In 1977, he replaced the Sex Pistols and, instead of playing his current single, launched into a different song, earning himself a lifetime ban. Eighteen years later, he repeated this stunt during the Beastie Boys' performance, again playing "Radio Radio." This time, however, it was clear that he was copying Jimi Hendrix's antics from the 60's, showing that Costello is more than willing to borrow from others. There's also an undercurrent of racism in Costello's past, with reports of him directing racial slurs at Ray Charles and James Brown. His vindictive nature is well-documented, with Costello himself admitting to bearing grudges and seeking revenge. As for his music, it's often uninspiring and lacks passion. His songs are interchangeable, with little progression from one album to the next. He fancies himself a jazz hybrid, but his music doesn't hold up in that genre either. His prolific output, with 34 full albums, 25 EP's, 25 live albums, and 85 singles in forty years, is more reminiscent of Steve Allen's claim of writing a song a day than anything else. In 2006, Costello released an EP with artwork blatantly stolen from Miles Davis' album "Sketches Of Spain." This is just one example of Costello riding on the backs of others, demanding much while offering little in return. I can't point you to any Elvis Costello music that's deeply satisfying, as there's nothing deep there. He's a one-sided record spin, a labor to listen to. If people stopped buying his music, I'm sure he'd still release an album every year for his own pleasure.
Since giving my deck and stylus an upgrade, I've been letting the Discogs app randomly select some of my lesser-spun vinyl. My turntable is as flat as a pancake and runs super quiet too. The sound quality is amazing, with Elvis' vocals coming through crystal clear. The best part? I snagged this gem for just £12.50GBP, still in its sealed packaging!
Great sounding album, just like most Back To Black reissues tend to be. The gaps between songs are flat and completely quiet. My version also has that same tracklisting mistake on the back cover that the other person talked about.
Badly mastered, not nearly as good as the original. I own many MoFi Costello records, but this one is really poorly made.
