This album is fantastic! What a timeless classic.
First and foremost, the elder of the two brothers stands out, delivering smooth yet forgettable rhymes over out-of-this-world beats. This is the closest I've come to hearing the Neptunes' signature sound blend with Biggie's flow and coke references. While this might not be unique in hip-hop, especially during that era, the tale of entering the game by getting bricks from their grandma is as fresh as the discography of the emcee who shares a last name with this brotherly duo (Kool Keith, for those who don't know). Fresh out of the Star Trak camp, I'd be wrong not to mention that Fabolous actually shines here, which is quite rare. Similar to Cam on "The Casket Drops," the Neptunes can bring out the best in artists not in their camp on these Clipse records. And even with noticeable missteps like the Faith Evans track (which can be excused for fitting into the album's loose narrative), or the fact that one of the Re-up Gang (either Coldchain or Liva) couldn't ride the beat to save their life on "Goddamn," and Jada & Styles sounded dope as always but STILL should have switched verses on the album's closer "I'm Not You" - the singles "Virginia," "Grindin" (That selector remix earns top marks for international appeal. Plus I love island women, and I have NEVER heard Sean Paul harmonize or rap like he did over this Neptunes track!), and "When's The Last Time" overshadow any flaws on this debut. All the potential is present in this album, now if only every Star Trak recording sounded like "Virginia" and "When's The Last Time" - then the Clipse legacy wouldn't be so tarnished.
Excellent quality production. In my view, it's the finest Clipse album out there and it's underrated.
I can't argue with this month's record pick at all, even though it's another somewhat conventional choice. I've always been a huge fan of this album, so I'm thrilled to have a fresh copy to enjoy. It's definitely in my top 25 favorite rap albums of all time. There are a few spots with some vocal distortion on my copy, but overall, it's a really well-done pressing. The vinyl looks amazing. The sleeves fit in the jacket this time, so hopefully, VMP has sorted out that problem!
Certainly runs a tad warm, yet the dynamics shine through. There's a touch of fuzz on certain sibilant sections, and a couple of S sounds in the vocals, but it's fantastic overall.
