Chris Bellman did a fantastic job mastering this live album, though you can't expect flawlessness from a live recording. The thick blue vinyl is a nice touch, and it's a great addition to my collection at a bargain price.
In the summer of '99, Scottish Indie Rock band Travis were right in the middle of a world tour, with a standout performance at the iconic British Glastonbury Festival. While now considered a genre staple, the band had been finding it tough to gain traction with their more grown-up follow-up to the hit debut 'Good Feeling'. With 'The Man Who' yet to make a splash in the charts due to its modern sound, things weren't looking too promising. But everything was about to change on a sunny afternoon in a countryside field. Released on CD to celebrate the set's 20th anniversary, this live album is a beautiful and modest collection. It kicks off with 'The Man Who's' mysterious and moody secret track 'Blue Flashing Light', then moves through a mix of singles, deep cuts, and even a B-side or two, giving fans a broad taste of their new sound. They didn't forget their roots, though, making sure to play all the singles from their debut album with great energy, getting the crowd wild with each song's Brit-Pop charm. Everything was going as planned until the weather took a turn. The moment Travis started playing their upcoming single 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?', the skies opened up, making them part of Glastonbury legend. By the end of the day, it was all the press could talk about, and soon the group's album shot up the charts. Interestingly, the four-piece said they didn't feel their time at the festival was anything special at the time and were going to chalk it up to experience. But when they saw the hype afterwards, it was almost like a dream come true! Proving Travis wrong, this release is a wonderfully captured piece of music history that will surely bring nostalgia to many, giving just enough to satisfy fans of both the old and (then) new styles. The only thing that could have made it better would have been a DVD to go with it, but that might have been a licensing nightmare!
