I've listened to a lot of them, this one's pretty good if it's in decent shape. It's a bit below the UK or Ludwig, but there are other solid records out there besides those.
Is it possible that Side 1 with the -1A matrix in the deadwax is from the original tapes but not necessarily from the RL lacquers? My Side 1, matching the -1A matrix, sounds louder and has more depth than any other version of this album I own, even when the preamp volume is set the same. From what I've gathered, record companies would occasionally send a tape to CRC, and they'd cut their own lacquers from it.
In summary, I'm really happy with this purchase. I got II & IV from the 2014 reissues and I-III-HOTH from 2022. This one's pretty much on par with the others. The bass might be a tad too much, which isn't the first time I've felt that way about these reissues. I'm a big fan of the high end, though. The overall energy on all of them is fantastic. I do see what others mean about the mids being a bit too quiet. But, I think adding more mid might've taken something away from the mix. More aggressive mids on top of those sparkling highs could've made things like the organ and (Melatron?) sound a bit harsh. Anyway, I love these albums and won't be looking for other versions. And man! What an album LZ II is, huh?
I just did a comparison with my other original (non-RL) version and wow, the buzz is genuine, you can trust it, it's the real thing. Both records appear well-aged and grade as VG. But, the RL pressing is dynamic and full-bodied, just how we prefer, the soundstage is incredible, it's like Bonham's drums are right there in the room! It feels so much more vibrant compared to my other copy. If you come across this record for around $130 USD like I did, don't think twice.. I didn't and had to go back! Awesome, crisp sound. The highs and lows both hit the spot.
